Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
S. CARHART AND YV. MOORE, OF BROOKLYN, NIMV YORK, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES, AND JAMES H. MCVILLIAMS, OF NEW YORK,I N. Y.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,759, dated June 29', 18158 To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, SOLOMON OARHART and VILLIAM MOORE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for lVindow-Sashes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein` Figure l, is a vertical section of the said sash fastener as in use; and Fig. 2, is a front view of the same fastening.
Similar' marks of reference denote the same parts.
Our sash fastener is especially adapted to those windows in which the central vertical bar of the sash is wide, in the style usually known as the imitation French sash, although our fastener might be applied to the sash rails at each side of the window.
In the drawing a, is the meeting rail of the lower sash, and Z), that of the upper sash.
c, c, are the vertical central bars of the sash, or may represent the side rails.
(l, is one half of a hinged drop screwed onto the upper side of the meeting rail a, and e, is the drop, united by the hinge l, to the part CZ.
f is a plate screwed onto the bar c, of the upper sash, beneath the lower edge of which the drop e, is turned up when the windows are to be fastened, so that the said drop e, forms a strut between the two sashes to prevent either from being moved, and is very strong and durable in its character.
ln order to prevent a knife or other article being inserted between the meeting rails (a, 2),) to throw the drop e, back, we provide a bolt or equivalent fastening on the plate f, so that the upper end of this drop e, may be retained thereby. This bolt g is shown as sliding between the beveled lips 2, 2, and retained by the head 3, in a slot in the plate 7. It however will be apparent that a different character of bolt, or a button or equivalent device might be used to hold the end of the drop e, to the lower edge of the plate WThat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isk The hinged drop e, and plate d, attached to the lower sash, in combination with the plate f attached to the upper sash, when the said drop e, is kept beneath the edge of the plate f by means of the bolt g or its equivalent substantiall7 as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our signatures this fteenth day of May 1858.
S. OARHART. VILLIAM MOORE.
W'itnesses LEMUEL l/V. SERRELL, THOMAS G. HAROLD.
