- My invention consists of knit-leggings for ladies and children, having an extension above the knee with an elastic in, the top, and also having a contracted portion immediately below the knee, formed by shorteningthe stitches, in which one or more elastics will be used or not for fastening that part to the leg, the object being to provide leggings which will cover the knee and a portion of the leg above, and retain their position, which leggings knit in the ordinary way will not do when extended above the knee.

IMPROVEMENT IN KNIT LEGGINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,810, dated February 24, 1874; application filed February 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, SAMUEL BARON, of ti 6 city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knit-Leggings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of knit-leggings for ladies and children, having an extension above the knee with an elastic in, the top, and also having a contracted portion immediately below the knee, formed by shorteningthe stitches, in which one or more elastics will be used or not for fastening that part to the leg, the object being to provide leggings which will cover the knee and a portion of the leg above, and retain their position, which leggings knit in the ordinary way will not do when extended above the knee.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved legging with the extension above the knee, and having elastics both at the top and at the contracted part below the knee. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same without the elastics below the knee.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the portion corresponding to the ordinary legging; B, the contracted part below the knee corresponding to the top of the ordinary legging; O, elastics in said part; B, the the extension above the knee; and E, the elastic in the top.
By the elastios in the knee-cover and the part B, contracted by shortening the stitches, the legging will be securely held up in its place, but elastics may be used at B also, if preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a knitlegging, A, having an extension, D, over the knee, with an elastic, E, in the top, and also having a contracted part, B, below the knee, either with or without an elastic, C, substantially as specified.
