Description
NITED STATES PATENT EEIGE.
JOHN O. GARNSEY, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN URINALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.145,34l, dated December 9, 1873;' application filed November 15, 1873.
YTo all lwhom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN C. GARNsEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Urinal` of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l rep= resents a top view of my improved urinal; and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same onthe line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a urinal for hospitals and for persons confined in` bed by sickness, bylwhich the difficulties eX- perienced with the present shapes, in regard to the manner of using and cleaning them, may be avoided, and greater facilities offered for handling the same, while the same shape may be equally well employed by both sexes. My invention consists, mainly, in a vessel of broad -oval base and ilat shape, with a handle ar- `broader part of which forms the rear, the narrower part the front, of the same. rlhe urin al rests with its broad bottom on the bed, having thereby a suitable support, without being upset easily by a change in the position o f the body. The handle oi' the urinal is somewhat in front of the center of the base, the rear part being lattened under suitable inclination, as shown in Fig. 2, and ext-ending up nearly to the foot of the handle. The center of gravity of the urinal and its contents is thrown back of the handle, and the spilling prevented by the inclined top oi' the rear part.l The uneven surface of the bed or the inclined position of the vessel exercises hardly any influence on the contents, and avoids thereby many of the annoying features of those in common use. The spout C extends in front of the handle beyond the base, and is curved downward, forming a orwardprojecting pointed part.
The urinal may be conveniently used without changing the position of the body, and by persons of either sex. The opening formed by the spout-in front of the handle is of sufficient size to admit thorough emptying and cleaning of the same.
` The manner of application and other advantages are obvious, and require hardly any special description, it being easily perceptible from the peculiar shape, as indicated in the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a urinal for bed-ridden persons which has a broad oval base with covered rear part, being provided with a handle in front of the center of the base, and a downward-curved forward-projecting spout, arranged in the manner substantially as and for the purposes described.
JOHN C. GARNSEY. Witnesses:
PAUL GoEPEL,
ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
