Description
ALI-'BED TAYLOR.
` Improvement n Chairs.
No. 123,131. rPanama11111.30, 18721 STATES ALFRED TAYLOR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,131, dated January 30, 1872.
Speciiication describing certain Improvements in Chairs, invented by ALFRED TA LOR, of the city of Brooklyn, State of New York. l
The object of my invention is to construct and produce chairs for classes, lecture-rooms, and churches, which, when coupled together, form a continuous seat, and can be given momentarily and readily different forms, as may be desired, such as straight, curved, undulating, or horseshoeshaped, without uncoupling or separating the chairs.
Figure I is a plan View of a number of chairs embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a bottom view of a single chair.
A is the chair, the seat b, the sides of which run parallel from the back to about the center line 5 from this line to the front the seat is s0 constructed as to only allow space enough for the knees of the persons who sit on the chair. Under the seat b, in the center line, near to the edge a, is securely' fastened or screwed on the male coupling O with its pivot d,- and to the opposite edge c of the same line is placed a female coupling, D, with the hole e, which is made to turn on the screw f, for the purpose of turning the same aside and under the seat when the chairs are to be used separately.
As these couplings are attached in the way described to each chair, of any number requisite, it will readily be understood that any given number of chairs as may be found necessary are coupled together by inserting the in'ale coupling-pivot b into the hole e of the female coupling D, which is turned outward for this purpose.
After the chairs are coupled together they are readily placed in any line most convenient for the occupants by simply pushing them in any desired direction.
Having thus fully described my invention, I desire to claim- The couplings G and D, in combination with the seats b ofthe chairs AA, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED TAYLOR.
