0. DAVID J GIRDLE FOR WOMENS APPAREL Filed March 9, 1922 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEYS Patented Apr. 17, 1923.
res
OTTO DAVID, OF FAR RQCKAWAY, NEW YORK.
GIRDLE FOR WOMENS APPAREL.
Application filed March 9, 1922. Serial No. 542,251.
T 0 all '10 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro DAVID, a citizen of the United States, residing at Far Rockaway, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Girdles for lVomens Apparel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oithe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to im provements in girdles for womens apparel; and the invention has reference to a novel construction of girdle having terminal portions which serve both an ornamental and utilitarian function. i
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel construction of girdle for womens apparel, consisting of a flexible main body portion to encircle the waist of the wearer, and capable of being tied or knotted or otherwise secured to-hold the same a ainst displacement, the tree depend ing endsof said main body terminating in ornamental portions .provided with pockets or receptacle members in which small arti cles .ot' v'arious kinds may be conveniently carried.
Other objectsof this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, willbe clearly understood from the following detailed description ofthe same.
With the objects of the invention in view,
the same consists, primarily, inthe novel construction ofgirdle for womens apparel hereinafter more fully set forth and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations 01" the various-devicesand parts, as well as in the details-of the construction thereof, all oi which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then finally embodied in the claims appended hereto. i r The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying. drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view oia novel girdle made according to and embodying the principles of thisinvention, and Figure 2 is a detail fragmentary vertical longitudinal section of one of the terminal portions of the same, taken on line 2-2 in said Figure l, and drawn on an enlarged scale. 3 1s a View similar 1, but illustrating a Figure to that shown in Figure somewhat modified form of the novel girdle; and Figure 4 is a detail rragmentary vertical longitudinal section of one otthc terminal portions of said modified form of girdle, taken on line +i--i in said Figure 3, and drawn on an enlarged scale.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 5' indicates the main body of the novel girdle structure, the same bein made of any suitable flexible material t3 permit of its being wound around the waist of the wearer. .The design and material of which said main body (if the girdle may be made, may also be subject to a wide range of variation as to structural arrangement and ornamental treatment and embellishment, the single requirement being that it is of suflicient flexibility to permit of its being. turned about the waist of the wearer.
Connected with the respective ends of said main body 5 of the girdle are pendant end members or terminal portions 6. The said pendant end members or terminal portions (3 may be made of any desired material and in any suitable shape, and the. game may be provided with such ornamental embellishment as may provide, in combination with the sliape, a desirable and attractive appearance and finish. Said pendant end members or terminal portions 6, comprise a front wall or side portion 7 and rear wall or side portion 8, which are joined together at their side and bottom marginal edges, so as to provide, intermediate the same, a pocket or receptacle space 9, the upper portions of said members 7 and 8 being disconnected or separated to provide a mouth or opening 10 giv ing access to the interior of the pocket or receptacle space 9. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, said. pendant end members or terminal portions 6 may be made as separate or independent elements, suitably connected to 'the (BXtIGmIi/MS ot' the main body 5 by interconnecting suspension loops or suspension members, such as the cord loops 11 as shown. It will be apparent that the girdle when worn, may be so arranged that the main body 5 will encircle the waistof the wearer, the free end portions being knotted, as at 12, or otherwise fastened to secure the same rill against displacement, said free end. portions being at the same time thus held in" dependmg relation to the waist-encircling portion of the main body so as to suspend the pend:
ant end members or terminal portions 6 in front of the wearer, whereby not only do said end members or terminal portions 6 provide a desirable finish to and ornamental embellishment of the girdle, but the same also are conveniently placed so that the util-i ity of the pocket or receptacle space 9 may be readily availed of by the wearer for the carrying of such small articles as handkerchiefs, keys, toilet articles and the like.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 1 of the drawings I have shown a somewhat modified construction of the novel girdle, to illustrate how the same may be varied in structure, arrangement and ornamental effect, while yet retaining all the utility which the same is adapted to provide. In this construction the girdle comprises a flexible main body 18 in strap or band like form, which may be made of any desired J fabric material in suitable colors, and posend members or terminal portions so as to provide a mouth or opening 17 giving access to the interior. of the pocket or receptacle space .16. The end portions thus provided may be furnished with ornamental embellishment, such,e. g, as the edging 18 and tassels 19 if desired. It will be'clear that the manner of arranging the above described construction of girdle about the waist of the wearer, with its free end portions having the end members suspended therefrom conveniently in front of the wearer, is substantially the same as alreadymentioned in connection with the first described construction of girdle.
It will be clearly understood that the girdle, with the novel combined ornamental pendant end members having the useful pockets or receptacle spaces, not only pro vide a very attractive ornamental finish for the girdle terminations, but byreason of the pocket or receptacle space provided thereby, also afford a very convenient utility to the wearer.
I am aware that, so far as form, material, shape, character of embellishment, and the like are concerned, many widely varying styles and appearances of the novel girdle may be obtained, without departing from the scope of this invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts making up the girdle as set' forth in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said devices and parts as illus trated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. An article of wearing apparel in the form of a girdle for exterior wear and adornment, consisting of a flexible main body portion adapted for tying about the:
waist of the wearer so as to provide pendant free ends, and ornamental terminal portions provided withmeans forming pocket spaces therein, said terminal portions beingv attached to said pendant free ends of said main body portion so as to hang therefrom.
2. An article of wearing apparel in the form of a girdle for exterior wear and adornment, consisting of a flexible main body portion adapted for tying about'the waist of the wearer so as to providependant free ends, ornamental terminalportions attached to said pendantfree ends of said main body portion so as to hang therefrom, and said terminal portions liavingfront and rear wall portions interconnected at their side and bottom edges to provide intermediate the same a pocket space having an open mouth at its upperend.
3. An article of wearing apparel in the form of agirdle for exteri or'wear and adornment, comprising a flexible main body portion adapted for tying about the waistof the wearer so as to provide at least one pendant free end, an ornamental terminal portlon attached to said free pendant end to hang therefrom, and means connected with said terminal portion providing a pocket space therein. i
l. An article of wearing apparel in the form ofa girdle for exteri'orwear and adornment, comprising a flexible main body adapted for tying aboutthe waist'of-the wearer so as to'provide at. least one pendant free end, an ornamental terminal portion lit] attached to said free pendant end to hang therefrom, and said ornamental terminal portion having a front and rear wall" por-' tion interconnected at their side'and 'bottom edges to provide intermediate the same a pocket space having an open mouth at its upper end. a
In testimony that I claim theinvention set forthwabove I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, 1922.
