A TTORNEYS arren stares ray TENT OFFICE.
JACOB SIMS. OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAND BAG.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnoon Snrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved combination handbag and powder puff container. Up to the present time, powder pufis have been customarily carried in the handbag of the user which is an unsanitary practice and has caused the powder to be spread upon other articles carried in the handbag. One of the objects of my invention is to provide a combination handbag and powder puff container in which the parts shall be combined so as to provide a light, simple and strong structure.
Another object of my invention is vide a structure having ing with a fabric facing.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view and shows my device in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective viewand shows my device in the open position.
Fig. 8 shows an elevation, partly in section.
Fig. 4c shows a plan view of Fig. 2.
The frame of the device is composed of two rings 1 and 2 made of metal or other light material and they are provided with inner peripheral grooves.
The upper ring 1 has a bag 3 secured thereto.
The bag 3 is made of fabric and is provided with a suitable lining, and is provided with suitable shirring strings 4 suitably to proan ornamental 1111- connected to the fabric at the top of the bagv in the well known manner.
The fabric of the bag 3 is sewed to a disc 5 made of cardboard or other suitable material. so as to form the bottom of the bag 3. This cardboard disc is secured into the groove of the ring 1 and a mirror 6 is also secured therein with the cardboard disc 5 as a frame or backing so as to hold the mirror firmly in position. The ring 1 is preferably covered with the same fabric as that of which the bag 3 is formed, and this fabric is tucked or gathered into the grooves of the ring 1 and is firmly held in position by the cardboard disc 5 Specificati'on of Lettersl-atent. Patented Feb 14, 1922. Application filed May 8, 1921. Serial No. 487,482.
so that the seam whereby the bottom of the bag 3 is sewed to the cardboard disc 5 is not visible when the parts are assembled.
At the front thereof, the ring 1 is provided with a tongue 7 which is adapted to be engaged by the catch 8 which is secured to the ring 2.
The ring 2 is substantially of the same structure and of the same contour as ring 1 and the two rings are connected by the piano hinge 9.
I The hand bag portion 10 is firmly secured to the ring in the manner shown more particularly in Fig.
i For this purpose the ring 2 is covered with fabric in the same manner as ring 1 and then the fabric of the bag 10 together with the lining is forced powerfully into the said groove so as to be firmly gripped and held. thereby as shown more particularly in Fig. 3 whereby the need of sewing is obviated and no line of stitch appears adjacent the ring 2. As can be seen clearly from Fig. 2, the hand bag 3 is preferably made of four portions having longitudinal seams 11 at which point the ornamental lining of the bag can be rendered visible for purposes of ornament.
- If desired, the rings 1 and 2 can be originally formed with their circumferential inner grooves somewhat open and of a size larger than their final size but when the parts have been assembled as before indicated, the rings 1 and 2 can be powerfully compressed so as to firmly grip theparts before mentioned.
By reason of the construction before-mentioned, a very neat structure is produced in which the lines of stitch are concealed and in which the need for sewing is reduced to a minimum. The mirror part is protected by the handbag part and it serves: as a cover for the handbag part. If desired, a small pocketbook 12 having a string 14 can be provided, the string 1% being gripped in'the groove of the ring 2 in the manner before described.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim r 1. A combination hand bag comprising two sections made of fabric and secured to two rings which are connected to each other by means of a hinge the fabric of one of said sections being sewed to a bottom member which is clamped in a groove in the ring of said section, so that the said bottom mem-rher forms a bottom for the said section and the line of stitching is concealed. V
2. A combination hand bag comprising two sections made of fabric and secured to two rings which are connected to each other 10 by means of a hinge, the fabric of one of bottom member having a mirror which is also held in the groove of the said ring.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
