Description

H. L. ANDERSON. Devices for Holding Wagon-Boxes to the Bolsters. N0.142,978. PatentedSeptember23,1873.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY L. ANDERSON, OF OHIGAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES M. RAND, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR HOLDING WAGON-BOXES TO THE BOLSTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,978., dated September 23, 1873; application filed August 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. ANDERSON, of Ghicago, State of Illinois, have invented a Swivel for Holding Wagon-Boxes Firmly to the Bolsters, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to securely fasten a wagon-box to the bolster or axle of a wagon.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a section of box; B, stake; O, bolster; d d, rings in stake, usually placed in position represented in Fig. 1; D, swivel into which curvedheaded bolts 6 e are screwed, one with a right-hand and the other with a left-hand threadthis being necessary, as, when the hand grasps the swivel D in the act of turning it, the screw-threads work toward the center, and, by this means, force the box firmly to the bolster or axle; F, stirrup secured to the upper edge of the box.
It will be seen that, by hooking one of the curved-headed bolts 6 6 into the ring d, and the other into the stirrup F, and forcing the swivel D in the right direction, the box will be held firmly to the bolster O. In some cities grain is often taken from one place to another in wagons without sacks, and, in order that it can be moved more expeditiously, false boxes are placed upon the top of the regular ones. In these cases more or less grain leaks out where the two boxes come together. By placing the stirrup F on the top of the false box and hooking: into the top ring d on the stake, this is obviated. It is not necessary that both curved-headed bolts should have threads, as one could be inserted in the swivel and headed loosely, or secured by a nut, as represented in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the swivel D, the curvedheaded hooks e e, and the stirrup F, the whole arranged and applied to a wagon, to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 28th day of July, 1873.
. HENRY L. ANDERSON.
