Letters Patent No. 108,419, dated October 18, 1870 antedated October 8, 1870;
. IMPROVEMENT IN WAGONS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1, JOHN W. WEST, of Saylorville, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in 'Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to suspend the box or body of a wagon, or any kind of a carriage, in such a manner that the pressure of the load or weight placed nponit'will be concentrated, so as to'press forward,
and to assist the propelling-power applied for moving the freighted carriage.
I This is accomplished by a series of rods radiating from the king-bolt,'-whieh passes through the front axle, and connecting with the box at various points.
The drawing is a perspective view of a half section of my suspended wagon-box.
The wheels of my wagon are not shown in the drawing; but the hind wheels are larger than the front wheels, and, consequently, the hind axle higher than the front axle.
The various parts of my wagon may be made of i wood and iron, and of various forms and sizes, and adapted for all the common uses of carriages.
The rods a a are made of metal, and may vary 111 form and number. They are all constructed with the king-bolt D, but the object for which they'are intended may be accomplished by connecting them with any part of the front of the wagon, so that the force from the weight on the box is brought to bear on the front axle.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- The suspending ot a box on a carriage by a senes of rods,'as described, or their equivalents, for the purposes set forth.
