SIDE-BOARD AND W.A.(rON-BODYk CLAMP.
Y Specification of Letterslatent.
Application led April 4, 1910. Serial No. 553,235.
Patented J an. 9,1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Edwards and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Board and Wagon-Body Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for securing wagon bodies to wagon frames to prevent their oscillation, and has for its object to provide such a device which may be used on any of the forms of wagons already in use.
A further object is to provide such a device which may be manufactured at a low cost from stock material.
Another object is to provide such a device which is adapted to be used eitherl upon wagon bodies having side boards thereon, or those without side boards.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a wagon body equipped with my device, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the device in engaged position, the side boards being removed.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a wagon frame including a bolster 10 and standard 11 of the usual construction, the standard being mortised in the end of the bolster leaving a slight portion of the bolster projecting beyond the base of the standard. Pivoted upon the side of the' standard, there is the operating lever 12 of the present invention, stamped from suitable material and having its outer end provided with a ring 12 at its extremity through which the finger may be inserted for operation Aof the lever.
Pivoted intermediately of the length of the lever 12, and adjacent its pivotal point there are long and short stirrup engaging hook members 14 and 15 respectively, arranged to engage the stirrups 16 and 17 respectively on the sideboard 18 and wagon body 19 respectively. The stirrups 16 may be formed in any suitable manner, but as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprise simply suitable castings comprising the perforated arms 20 arranged to be secured against the side of the wagon body or sideboard, from which depends the loop or stirrup port-ion 21 slightly inclined outwardly and adapted to receive the hook portions of the membersy 14 and 15 downwardly therein. rIhe members 14 and 15 are secured to the lever 12 by means of a threaded stub 22 carried yupon the lever, and having a suitable thumb nut 23 engaged on its outer end to allow removal of the hook members when desired.
Mounted on the stub 22 is a third hook device somewhat diferent in shape, and indicated by the numeral 24, which is adapted to engage over the upper edge of the wagon body without the use of the stirrup members, whereby its operation is greatly simplied.
In use, the stirrups are secured upon the side board and wagon body at the proper height, being spaced a distance equal to the difference in length between the hooks 14 and 15, after which the end` of the lever 12 is pivoted upon the standard 11 at such a point as to draw the hook members downwardly forclamping action upon the stirrups, the end of the lever preferably passing inwardly of the line of the resultant force of the strain exerted upon the lever `by the two hooks so that this strain will hold the device in locked position. The hook members 14 and 15 are then engaged with the stirrups, and the operating lever 12 forced downwardly and inwardly. By this means the wagon body and sideboards are held securely against loose movement during the passage of the vehicle over rough roads, and the side boards are in addition held securely upon,A the body.
It will be apparent that the device is adapted to be manufactured in a very economical manner, as each of the parts may be stamped from sheet material, and very little labor is involved inthe assemblage and application of the device. It will be understood however, that any other suitable material may be used if desired.
The hook member 24 is used where no side boards are required upon the wagon, and when this member is used the other two hooks are turned downwardly out of the way, or may be removed entirely by means of the thumb nut 23 if desired.
It will of course be understood that any other method of securing the device to a standard than that described may be utilized if desired.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a wagon frame having sideboards and superposed sideboards, of an operating lever pivotally mounted on the standard of the wagon, a bolt disposed transversely through the lever below its pivotal point, a shorter angular lever and a longer curved hook member having openings to receive said bolt, and loops secured to thesuperposed sideboards, apertured plates seeured to the sideboards of the wagon, said shorter angular hook' members adapted to engage in the apertured 15 erating lever 1s pressed into a downward 20 depending position.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT C. SMITH.
