OIL-WELL PUMP JACK.

.county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-VVell Pump Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to pump jacks for oil wells and has for its princi- I pal object to provide an improved device of this character which can be readily applied to or detached from a well and which involves but few parts in its simply designed construction. I 1
A. further object is to provide ac-pump jack having the oscillating beam mounted for quick and easy movement without binding or side pull and so proportioned at the hinges and joints as to avoid any possibility of the pump rod being forced forward or backward.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention may be saidvto reside in'the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts'as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, wherein-5 Figure 1 discloses the manner of attaching the improved jack to a well. In the drawings, 1 indicates the head end of a well casing from which projects the tubing 2 and pump rod 3. The pump'jack is designed to be attached to'the head of the well casing and operates to raise the pump rod 3; the weight of the latter tending to lower it as the beam of the jack is moved downwardly. In the present instance, the invention is connected to the head of the well casing 1 by means of a collar clamp iron 4 which is adapted to embrace the head of the casing, being usually made of sections bolted together firmly so asnot to slip out of place. This clamp is provided on opposite sides with outwardly directed studs 5 forming pivots for the fulcrum or oscillating arms 6 and 7 respectlvely. sides to elongated lift beams8. This beam 7 isusually of heavy material and is made solid throu hout the major portion of its length to add to its stability. One, end however of th s beam is bifurcated or slit longitudinally from edge to edge to provide side strips or tongues 9 and 10. These tongues are des1gned to be sprung apart to widen the space therebetween and have their top edges incurved to suitably receive a corre sponding curved cap plate 11. This cap plate is provided with a suitable numberof openings whereby it may be conveniently fastened to the incurved edges of the tongues 9 and .10, thus holding them in. sprung apart, spaced, relation and spanning over the space between them to provide a guide for the pump rod 3, the latter passing through and working conveniently in the elongated slot 12 of the guide. The pump rod is thus passed between the split end of the lift beam and permits the beam to slide along the rod in the operation of the device.
The beam is provided with a suitable brace to insure strength and to reinforce the beam in case of a heavy lift orstrain, as when used on a very deep well, and this brace comprisesa rod 13 having its respective ends fastened. to the. solid portions of the beam, as indicated at 14 and 15 and supported intermediate its ends by a center block 16. Designed for riding movement over the well clamp dis a beam which straddles the well casing so that its side bars 17 and 18 fit in between the casing and the oscillating I arms 6 and 7, resting upon the .collar 1. Each side bar of the pull beam carries adjacent its opposite end a pair of curved brackets 19. Two of these brackets, adjacent one end are adapted to be bent inwardly toward each otherto provide a single, projecting stud 20, perforated with an eye 21 to receive the connecting end of a turn buckle coupling 22, the opposite end of which is designed to be connected to any suitable operating means for drawing the pull beam back and forth across the bearing clamp 4, thus rocking the beam 8 and moving the pump rod up and down. The remaining two brackets, at the opposite end of the pull beam, straddle the lower end of the oscillating beam 8 to support it on opposite sides, being pivoted thereto as indicated at 23; the brackets being curved downwardly so that the pivot is in direct line with eye 21 'of'the oppositebrackets and the center pivot 5 causing the pull to be in a straight line without any tendency to draw the beam 6 forward or back but to'lift it straight up and down. To insure ease of movement the parts are so proportioned that the guide 9 and pivot 23 0f the beam are an equal distance from pivot 24c, while thepivot' 5 of the oscillating arm isthe same distance from'*pivot 24 as both the pivot 23 and the guide' '9. Byreason 'of the curved brackets 19', "the eye 21',- pivot "5 and pivot 23 are in straight alignment sothat thedirection of pullis through the center of pivot 5.
The device is attached to the well by means of the clamp 4 which clamps onto the casing head'so as to support the side bars' of the pull beam. The pump 'rod is' then'engage'd with the head of th'e' working beam, the latter passing -up through the guide'platell in the manner previously described; A "clamp 25 of any conventional form can befastened to the pump rod, above the plate and provid'esan abutment for "contact "with the plate as" the beam tilts up ward'ly for raising the pump rod. The tilt ingof'the beam isof course accomplished by the reciprocating of'jth'e pull member backand forth across the clamp 4 which is done through means of'the turn buckle 22 t 7 attached to'some suitable source of power.
Asthe-pull-member is reciprocated it pulls upon the lower or pivoted end 23 of the beamycausing it to'rock on pivot-24 so that the guide 11 isbrought into abutment with the clamp 25, forcing the pump rod upwardly,the curvature of the plate affording an easy riding surface for the clamp as the jack is operated; The reciprocation of the pull member and the rockingof the beam 8 causes the arms 6 and 7 to oscillate on their pivots 5 as the pump rod is raised higher and higher so that when the pull beam. has been drawn to the endof its forward stroke, the oscillating arms and'beam will be approximately in vertically disposed relation, almostparallel with the pump rod and well casing. The stroke of the pump rod "can be regulated by screwing up the turn buckle or lettingoutthe same, as the" farther up the screw'buckle is turned orthe rod to clean thewell.

Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patent-'is:-
A pumpingjack comprising a collar clamp adapted to embrace the head of'a well oas-' sooscillating arms pivot'ally' connected at one end to said collar clamp, a lift beam" pivotally attached :to the opposite ends of said "arms, said 'lift' beam being slit 1 longitudinally at one" end to provide resilient tongues,an apertured rplate secured'to' the top of said tongues for maintaining the same sprung apart and also constituting a guide for a pump rod passing through the slit portion ofthe beam,parallel sidebars, 'connec-ted'to the opposite" end of the lift beam and slidable over the collar clamp and connecting means atthe' front end of the slidable bars for actuating the lift beam and pump rod.
