Description
' A. H. WILLIAMS MOP Filed May 29, 1926 I Ill /4 Patented Dec. 14, 1926.
ALVIN H. WILLIAMS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OE' DOVER, FLORIDA.
MOP.
Application led May 29,
This invention aims to provide novel means for mounting the head of a swab or mop on a handle.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of' devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lith the foregoing and other objects 1n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ot parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of F the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is an elevation wherein the' device is viewed at right angles to the showing of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section wherein parts appear in elevation;
Figure 4 is a fragmental elevation showing a. portion of the handle;
Figure 5 is a cross section taken through the handle and the cuff.
The device comprises a carrier 1 including a loop 2 having a base bar 3 and side arms 4, a handle 5 being extended between the side arms 4 and having a notch 6 receiving the base bar 3. A securing device 7, such as a pin or nail, is carried by the handle 5 and is extended across the notch 6 to hold the base bar 3 therein. The head 8 of the swab comprises members 9 extended through the loop 2 and located on opposite sides ot the handle 5, the members 9 of the head 8 being iiexed across the base` bar. A binder 10 surrounds the head members 9 and is disposed below the handle 5. A means is provided for connecting the .side arms 4 to the handle 5, the said means consisting of a cuff 11 mounted on the handle 5 and hav ing longitudinal sockets 12 receiving` the arms 4.
A compressor is supplied, the same including two U-shaped members 14 which 1926. Serial No. 112,618.
cooperate to form a ring 15 slidably mounted on the handle 5, vthe ends of the U-shaped members 14 being twisted together to form arms 16 which are disposed longitudinally of the handle 5, the arms 16 having spring fingers 17 which diverge as shown in Figure 1, the fingers being bowed away from the head 8, as .shown in Figure 2. Rollers 19 are disposed between the lower ends of the fingers 17 and are journaled thereon, as shown at 20, the rollers engaging opposite surfaces of the head 18. The rollers are pressed against the head by the spring tingers 17 and when the ring 15 is reciprocated on the handle 5, the rollers, moving lengthwise or' the compr-essible head 8, will squeeze the water out of the head. When the compressor is slid downwardly as far as it will go, the movement in that direction is limited by the engagement between the ring 15 and the upper end of the cult 11.
Aside from the compressor, the device includes a simple but effective means for securing the head of a swab to a handle in such a way that these parts cannot be separated readily, notwithstanding the severe use to which articles of the class describe are subjected.
IVhat is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a carrier comprising al loop including a base bar and side arms. a handle extended between the side arms and having a notch receiving the base bar, securing device carried by the handle and extended across the notch to hold the base bar therein, means connecting the side arms to the handle, a head comprising members extended through the loop and located on opposite sides of the handle, and iiexed across the base bar, and a binder surrounding the head members and disposed below the handle.
2. A device of the class described, constructedas set forth in claim 1, and further characterized by the fact that said means consists of a cuff mounted on the handle and having longitudinal sockets receiving the arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aixed my signature.
