Description
UNITED STATES PATENT A OFFICE.
DUNCAN A. COOPER, OE WORCESTER, ENGLAND.
.IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVE-FASTVENING'SV.
`specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1319.703, dated J une 10, 1873; application filed April 2Q, 1873.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, DUNCAN ANDERSON COOPER, Of `the city of Worcester, England,
. have invented certain new and useful Improveings making apart of this specilication, in which- Figure 1 represents a top plan of the clasp or fastening. Fig. 2 represents a plan Of the under side thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section through the clasp or fastening. Fig. 4.
j represents, in perspective, a view of the under side of the Clasp or fastening.
Mylinvention consists in a clasp Or fastening, which is secured to the button and the button-hole Of a glove or other wearing apparel for the purpose of fastening the said gloves or other garment or' apparel.
TO enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to thedraw mgs.
The clasp A consists of a hollow Or flat body Or shell, made, by'preference, of sheet metal, (but which may be made of any other material,) and of any desired shape and size, and ornamented to suit the taste of the user. At
lthe back of the said body or shell, and at one end thereof, a projecting stud or head, d, is situated; and at the opposite end of the said body or shell two projecting plates or ears, c c,
(or one projecting plate forming two ears,) arev i` Y plate, formed, as described, with the hole a b situated, the said ears being separated from one another by a taper slot or opening, as at a. The stud and projecting ears are arranged in nearly the same plane. The projecting ears are made by turning over the edges of the metal body or shell into a plane parallel with the said body or shell, or by making them separately and soldering them to the back of the body; and the projecting stud maybe separately made, and afterward secured by its stem or shank to the inner side of the shell or body by riveting, soldering, or other wellknown fastening.
The solitaire clasp or'fasteningthus constructed is applied to the glove in the following manner: The stud or head d is passed through the button-hole Of the glove, and the 'Ihe button of the glove will readily pass into the shell or body of the clasp through the larger portion b ofthe Opening; and then the shank of the button-Or what is its substitute, the threads by which the button is fastenedwill readily lind its seat in the narrower portion a. thereof. To unfasten the glove, it is only necessary to slide the butt-On of the glove from under the projecting ears, or to the larger part of the opening, and it can then be detached from the clasp.
The major portion of this clasp may be stamped up by machinery ont of suitable sheet metal, and be thus very cheaply made. The ornamentation may be given 10 the clasp while being struck up in the dies or formers; and, as a new article of manufacture, this clasp will not only be Ornamental, but quite useful.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tO secure by Letters `Patent- The improved solitaire glove clasp or fastening, comprising theback plat-e and front in the back pla-te for engagingthe button on one side of the slit, and the stud d for attaching it to the glove on the other side of the slit, substantially as specified.
DUN GAN A. COOPER.
