CHARLES W. LORD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I'IALF TO ORA E. CASE, OF SAME PLACE.
SHIRT-WIST FASTNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 676,753, dated June 18, 1901.
applicationlled February 23, 1901. Serial N0.4S,336. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES lV. LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Shirt-VVaist Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to fasteners for garments, and particularly for that class of clothing commonly known as shirt waists.7 Manufacturers of such clothing, to save eX- pense and to allow the wearer an opportunity to display his personal taste, malte these garments without buttons, and in place thereof pierce the overlapping edges with a hole at regular distances to allow insertion of some form of stud or collar-button. The field of ornamentation furnished by the head of an ordinary button is limited, and when, as at present, the style demands a series of contiguous button-heads trouble has arisen to ind any means of attaching such a series without the actual sewing onof each button and making a plurality of buttonholes. The above difculties are overcome and a strong fastener furnished by the novel structure hereinafter described in connection with the drawings, wherein-- Figure lis a front View of a fastener involving my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same; Fig. 3, an edge View of same; and Fig. et, a similar View showing engagement with garment and, by broken lines, semi-engagement.
My fastener consists of a body portion a, having a longitudinal channel b along a portion of its face and openings c c through the body a at each end of the channel. Resting in this channel is the body d of a pin niember, which projects at right angles through the opening c to form a post c at the upper portion of the fastener and whose opposite end h passes through the lower openin g c and forms a hook-shaped pin. The opening c is sufficiently large to allow to be swaged therein and around the post c the shank z' of an ordinary button carrying on its free-extremity the shoe Z.
The face ornamentation of my fastener may consist of any desired form. In the illustration are soldered a series of pearl buttons m. The engagement of the pin is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a fastener of the class described, the combination with an ornamental body, of a post formed separate from and resting in said body and projecting from the back` of said body near one end of said back and at right angles thereto, a shoe upon the free end of the post and a pin member projecting from the body-back near its end opposite to said post and in the same vertical plane with the post as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a fastener of the class described, the combination with an ornamental body, of a post formed separate from and resting in said body and projecting from the back of said body near one end of said back and at right angles thereto, a shoe upon the free end of the post and a pin member projecting from the body-back near its end opposite to said post and in the same vertical plane with the post, said pin member being shaped asa hook with its point diagonally approaching the plane of the fastener-body, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a fastener of the class described, the combination with a longitudinally-channeled body, of a pin member traversing and xedly held in said channel, one end of the pin member being upset from the body-back to form a post, and the other end bent to form a pin also projecting from the body-back, and a shank and shoe around and fixed to said post which latter is swaged in an opening in the body-back, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have afxed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES XV. LORD: Witnesses:
WVM. C. STANTON,
Honarro E. BnLLows.
