CHARLES E. FELLOWS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASES FOR CONTAINING INDEXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139.503, dated June 3, 1873; application filed April 22, 1672. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. CHARLES E. FELLoWs, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and btate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful (Jase for Uontaining Indexes-it is designed for the use of post-office clerks, merchants, and othersandl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consis s in the construction of a case or box, the'dimensions of which are not fixed. Said box or case A is divided into two or more compartments by a partition or partitions placed perpendicular to the top and bottom of the box. Into the inner surfaces of the sides of the box, and correspondingly into the surfaces of thepa-rtition or partitions, grooves are cut, running in an oblique direction across the surfaces of the above-mentioned parts of the box. Into these grooves a number of slides, B, are fitted and arranged in alphabetical order. To each slide is attached a spring, D, of some elastic or flexible material. These springs pass through the back of the box by means of apertures made for that purpose, and are secured on the exterior of the back of the box. Each slide is inserted in its respective groove, and the spring attached thereto is passed through its appropriate aperture and secured as above mentioned. Therefore, since each slide has its appropriate spring and groove, in case of accident to a spring, the slide to which it is affixed may be removed, the spring readj usted or renewed without in the least interfering with the movements and successful operations of the others. Each list, or the number of names, titles, &c., which compose a list upon each slide, varies in the number of names, titles, &c., which compose it, consequently some one memorandum maybe so long that a slide of greater length would be required to contain it. To obviate this a double or folding slide, 0, is employed; that is,
two slides combined, the union being elfected by means of a spring, E, and a contrivance or c'b ntrivances which answer the purposes of hinges. l
The necessity of the spring, its adjustment,
and operation, will be shown in the accompanymg drawings. When it is required to [ind nying drawings which constitute a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2 represents a slide, and Fig. 3, a folding slide. in Fig. l are shown the slides; also, the omission l: a slide, to show the character of the grooves; also, the general shape and appearance geni'all y of the device. Fig. 2 represents the under side of a slide, showing the adjustment. of the spring. Fig. 3 represents the folding slide and unfolding spring attached.
What I claim as my invention, andde'sireto secure by Letters Patent, is l. The box A, provided with the retractile index slides B, when constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The double folding retractile index sprin slides B 0, when constructed substantially as herein set forth.
CHARLES E. FELLOWS.
