UNITED STATES JULIUS C. BORCHERDT,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO F. CORTEZ IVILSON, OF SAME PLACE.
FISHING-TACKLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,979, dated December 24, 1889. Application filed January 14, 1889. Serial 110,296,261. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. BORCHERDT, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing-Tackle Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my box as preferably constructed, a portion of a removable partition or leaf within the cover being broken away. Fig. 2 is a like view of the cover and leaf separated from each other and from the box, and Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a longitudinal and a cross section of said cover and leaf and show the manner of connecting said parts and of constructing the pocket attached thereto.
. Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to provide within a fishing-tackle box a convenient and safe means for separately storing any desired number of artificial flies, hooks, 850.; and to this end such invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ a box A, which is preferably constructed from sheet metal and has the general rectangular form shown. Said box is i'nclosed upon its upper side by means of a cover A, that is hinged thereto at one edge, and when closed down is fastened in place by a hasp a and staple a in the usual manner. The interior of the box A is divided into any desired number of compartments a a ,'&c., to adapt it to receive and contain reels, lines, &c., and either of such compartments may be still further divided by means of a removable tray a if desired, such arrangement forming no part of my invention.
Upon the inner face of the cover A are secured a series of pockets B and B, that are constructed from parchment or other suitable flexible material and are arranged in vertical and horizontal rows, as shown in Fig.2. Said pockets are formed by folding the material in longitudinal plaits b and b, which correspondin width to the depth of the pockets, and then running rows of stitches b and b at right angles to the lines of such plaits. If desired, the material of which the pockets is made may be re-enforced by strips of tape or thin leather folded over the plaits and properly cemented before stitching, and if it is thoughtbest to make a pocket of greater area at its mouth strips of felt or other suitable material maybe inserted before stitching.
The number of pockets which may be formed upon the inner face of a box-cover will be sufficient for many persons; but where it is desired to carry a large number of flies and hooks, additional pockets B and B are attached to one face or to both faces of a leaf C, that is constructed from sheet metal or other suitable material, and is preferably adapted to fit into and be contained within the cover A, where such leaf is held in place by means of lugs a and a, which are secured to said cover and engage with its lower edge, and a turn-button c, that is pivoted upon the upper portion of said leaf and is adapted to engage with a lug e upon the contiguous portion of said cover.
It will be obvious that any desired number of leaves provided with pockets may be employed and that such leaves may be placed between the cover and box, or wholly within the latter, instead of within said cover, without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination with a box for fishingtackle, a leaf of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is removably connected therewith, and upon one face or upon both faces is provided with a series of flexible pockets that are adapted to receive and contain artificial flies, hooks, &c., substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. In combination with 'a box for fishingtackle, a leaf of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is removably connected there with, and pockets that are secured upon the inner face of such cover and upon one face or both faces of such leaf, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a box for fishing scribed, for removably securing said leaf in position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I 15 have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of November, 1888.
JULIUS C. BORCHERDT.
