'PAUL FSQ PUPILLA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
mamme-Bauen.
specification of Lenersratent. e Pat-@umd Aug, 1g., 1921,
Application. tiled March 27, 19.20, Serial. No. 369,236. Renewed February 12, 1921. Serial No., 44,537.
To aZZwwm, it may concern-.-
Be it known that l, PAUL P. PUPILLA, a citizen of the yUnited States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and lfmproved Shaving-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, andvexact description.
lt is well appreciated that shaving brushes have left much -tobe desired in that although a brush is 'placed in -a sterilizer, the lather is mixed ina mug containing soap and water. l
This practically renders the sterilization of the brush useless, in view of the fact that the -mug is repeatedly used, and consequently, the brush after passing over the face of one person is dipped into the mug again for a second vapplication of lather and the lather remaining in the mug is contaminated so that no amount of sterilizing of any brush usedv during subsequent operations Will serve to eliminate danger ofinfection. i
With this in view it will be appreciated that the mostjideal arrangement would be' `one in which'thc brush might be sterilized and the soap applied either directly to the face of the person to be shaven orto the brush, the lather being mixed upon the face or other portion of the body.
This has heretofore been impossible in view of the fact that it would be necessary to shave a person near a faucet, as itis necessary to meisten ai brush more than once to obtain a suitable lather. f
' Having this in view I have now constructed a brush particularly applicable for use in connection with a sterilizer, and by means of which it Will be possible to either apply soap to the bristles of the brush, or to that portion to be shaved, and to mix a separate and independent lather for each person being shaved.4
A' further object of my invention is the provision of a brush of this type which will provide adequate amount of water instantly available for use in forming the lather.
A still further object of this invention is the construction of a brush which will permit of a sufficient amount of water being provided to insure the production of a lather l of proper consistency.
Reference is had to the attached sheet' of. drawings which illustrates one practical embodiment of which-.-
Figure 1 is a sectional side view taken through a brush handle constructed in accordanoe withv my invention, and showing the same in its normal position.
Fig. 2 isa sectional'view, but showing the parts in the position which they assume while ejecting the fluid, and v Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along th my invention, and in lines 3-3 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrow.
In all of these views like reference numerals designate similar parts, and'the reference numerals 5 indicates the conventional bristles of a brush which may be set in rubber or any suitable anchoring medium such las 6. formed with a centrally disposed opening '7. v
A collar such as 8 embraces the base portion of the bristles 5, and connects the brush portion to the handle, which latterincludes lin the reservoir 9 is a tubesuch as 13, which tube is formed with a thickened reduced innerend portion 14, and slidably mounted within said tube and extending beyond the ends of the same is a rod l'having'one of its ends secured to the inner face of the cap 10, the opposite end mounting asA at 16, a plunger 17 in alinernent With the opening 12 of the bulb 11.
vIn operation it Will be appreciated that the collar 8 may be removed from the reservoir 9, and the latter filled with'pure water, subsequent or prior to which the brush may have been placed in a sterilizer of any desired type. The collar 8 is slipped over the upper end of the reservoir 9 and the brush is' now read for shaving. 'Upon the lather being place upon the surface to be shaved or upon the bristles of the brush and the -cap portion telescoped with respect to the reservoir 9 as has been indicated in Fig. 2, that fluid trapped Within the bulb 11 will roo beejected through thebopening 7 andinto l belng moved inwardly against the 'action of the spring 18 interposedbetween the thickened inner end portion 14 of the tube 13 and inner face of the cap 10 the rod 15 and plunger 17 will be projected inwardly in the manner indicated in Fig. 2.y The plunger 17 acts as a valve, by virtue of its coperation with the opening 12 'of the bulb 11 so that no 'liuid may escape through this opening upon the bulb being constricted, but that fluid which is entrapped within the bulb will be forced as aforestated into the opening 7 of the-bristles 5. h
It is to be appreciated that that degree of adjustment most desired may be secured by virtue of the connection existing between the plunger 17 and rod 16 in that a movement on the part of the plunger 17 with respect to the rod 15 will permit agreateror less `movement of the cap 10 of the reservoir 9 and consequently a regulating ofthe working stroke of the plunger 17 against the bulb 11.
Further it will be appreciated that this brush will render itself readily to 'practical use in that the same may be operated by engaging the collar 8 with two of the fingers and permitting the palm to bear against the cap 10 so that its cap will be moved with respect to the reservoir 9 and result in operation of the parts as has'been described.
bviously numerous modiications 'of structure might be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims, which read,
What I claim as new `and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:- l. Al brush, including bristles, a basefor such bristles, said base being formed with an opening, a bulb positioned to the rear of and in communication 4with said opening, a handle forming a reservoir, said bulb being formedwith-an opening permitting of communication between the same and the reservoir forming handle, and means for actuating said bulb toexpel Huid within the same through the base opening.
2. A brush including bristles, a base for such bristles, said base being formed with an opening, a bulb positioned to the rear of and in communication with said opening, al handle forming a reservoir, said bulb being formed with an opening permitting of communication between the same and the reser- Voir forming handle, and means movable with respect vto said handle adapted to act upon said bulb to expel fluid therefrom through the base opening.
3. A brush, including-bristles, a base for such bristles, such base being formed with an opening, a reservoir adapted to be secured to said base, avbulb-within said reservoir, and to the rear of said base, means for constricting said bulb, said bulb having means for permitting .a fluid within the reservoir vto pass into said bulb.
4. A shaving brush, including bristles, a base for such bristles, such base being formedwith an openinog a handle to the rear` t said base, said handle including a reservoir, a bulb within said reservoir and secured to the rear of said base, said base being formed with an opening, a cap slidably mounted, upon such reservoir, and means extending nfrom such cap into said reservoir inline withy the bulb opening, said means being adapted to be moved to-bear against said bulb opening and to constrict the bulb.
y 5. A shaving brush, including bristles, a base for` such bristles, such base being formed with an opening, a handle to the rear of said base, said handle including a reservoir, a bulb within said reservoir and to the rear of said base, a cap slidably mounted upon such reservoir, and a slidable rod extending from said cap into said reservoir, a plunger secured to the inner end of said rod, Ysaid plunger being in line with an opening' in said bulb, and being adapted upon inward movement to close'the opening and to cons'trict the bulb.
- 6. A sha-ving brush, including bristles, a base :for such bristles, 'such base being formed with an opening, a handle to the rear of Asaid base, said handle including a reser Voir, a bulb within said reservoir and to the rear of said base, a cap slidably mounted upon such reservoir, and a slidable rod extending frorn said cap into said reservoir, a plunger adj ustably mounted upon the end of the rod, 'said plunger being. in line with an opening in said bulb, and being adapted upon inward movement to close the opening 'and to constrict the bulb.
