TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' ratenteanec. 1e, 1919.
Application led July 1, 1918.` Serial No. 242,777.
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZ SosDIAN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
,Ihis invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes and particularly to types adapted to carry a supply of dentifrice in a powder or paste form. y
The principal object of the invention is to plovidea tooth brush having a hollow handle adapted to contain a quantity of dentifricein a powder or paste form, the same being so arranged as to be conveyed to the bristles of the brush at any required time.
A further .object is to provide means whereby a spring pressure is applied to the material so that the same may be unfailingly fed through the handle portion of the brush and finally to provide means which will prevent th'e feeding of the dentifrice at such time as it is not required.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing 'a tooth brush made in a'iccordance with the invention.. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. taken through the center line of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 4`4 of Fig. 2..
In carrying out vthe invention use is made of a substantlally cylindrical handle 10, having at its outer end a knurled cap 11, engaged by screw-threads 12, and provided with an inner extending point 14, guiding the outer end of a helically coiled compresm sion spring 15, its opposite end pressing against a plunger 16, free to slide within the tubular handle.
The opposite end of the handle is integrally formed with a solid head 18, having a threaded stem 19, engageable with the brush backing 20, from which extend on one side the bristle tufts-22 in the usual manner.'
Formed through the. head 18 is an opening 24 communicatingwith a similar elongated opening 25, in the backing 20, and extending from the opening 25 are a plurality of transverse passages 26 reaching-nearly to the edge of the brush backing and communicating lwith opening 25through openings 27,
Formed with the plunger 31 is a plunger rod 35, and secured on the rod 35. is a collan 36, having an extending key 37, while in' the outer end of the plunger rod 35 is an actuating knob 38, the key being engageable in a key-way 39 .formed in the head.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the plunger 31 is adapted to be pressed outwardly into position to close the passage through the opening 24 by the `spring 32, and that the plungermay be depressed by actuating the head 38 in an obvious manner.
If it is desired, however, to maintain the plunger in an extended position, as when the brush is not in use, by rotating the knob 38 the key 37 may be so positioned as to rest against the outer surface of the head' 18 as' shown `in Fig. 2, thereby preventing any of the material held Within the reservoir or tubular casing 10 from entering into the passage 24 and passing intohthe brush, the plunger acting as a valve in controlling the passage.
In filling the device, the knob 11 is unscrewed, the spring and plunger removed, and a desired quantitl entered into the cy` lindrical reservoir, w ereupon the plunger 16 is inserted so as press the material toward the front of the apparatus by the action of the spring 15 which is held in operative position by the head 11. y
From the. foregoing it will be seen that a convenient device has been shown in which a tooth brush may besupplied with any quantity desired of material carried within the tubular handle element.
The construction is of a simple character,
comprised of two parts, the operation of which will be evident from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is.
In a fountain tooth brush of the character described, comprising a. handle adapted for the reception of a paste, and having a head with a transverse opening and e key- Way, a. plunger in the opening of said head, a, coiled compression spring normally pressing said plunger upward, a screw-threaded plug in the bottom part of the opening holding said spring in operative position, a plunger rod, a collar on said rod, the latter provided with :L key and an o erating knob on l0 A ln testimony whereof I have aixed my 15 signature.
