T 0 aZZ whom t may concer/1t Be it known that I, HERMAN PIcHnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handbags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a hand bag of the kind carried by ladies when shopping and the object of the invention is to provide the bag with means for preventing the bag from being surreptitiously opened while it is hung on the arm or held.

The invention is designed to provide a strap handle with its ends secured to one of the frames of the bag and having a loop portion forming a handle connected to the other frame whereby the frames, when closed and the looped portion is held taut cannot be opened without detection.

The invention resides in the novel combinations hereinafter described and claimed, reference being -made to the accompanying drawing in which:

In the drawing is shown a bag, the body of which consists of a pair of sides each constructed of an outer cover of fabric or leather 5 with an intermediate stiffener 6 and a lining 7 to form a receptacle for holding articles. rEhe sides are connected together by means of flexible end members 8 made to limit the opening swingl ofl the sides. On the upper ends of the sides is secured preferably by stitches 9, a pair of frames 10 and 11, the latter having a jaw 12 made to slide over the jaw 13 of the first named frame. The stitches permit the frames when open to oscillate relative to the sides of the bag as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

In the jaw of each frame is located a pair of slots 14, the jaw 13 being adapted to anchor the ends 15 of a strap 16 which passes upward through the slots in the jaw. The strap extends from the slots in jaw 13 up through the slots in jaw 11 thereby formover the arm, the opening of the frames to give access to the receptacle will cause a contraction of the loop thus warning the person carrying the bag. Vihen it is deslred to open the bag, the frames areswung outward in opposite directions causing the strap to be drawn through the slots in the jaw 12 thereby shortening the loop. The frames are preferably made movable in relation to the sides forming the receptacle so that while opening the bag, the slots will positionthemselves as vindicated in Fig. 2 to permit the strap to freely pass through the slots.

Suitable finger members 17 arranged on each side of the frames can be grasped when it is desired to open or close the bag.

I claim:

1. A hand bag having a pair of frames provided with angular jaw members to close one above the other, a pair of slots in each of the frames, one being above the other, a strap having its ends anchored in the slots of one of the frames, said strap movably coacting with the slots in the other frame to form aloop for holding the bag.

2. A hand bag comprising a receptacle having a pair of frames swingingly mounted thereon, said frames being provided with angular jaw members to close within each other, a pair of slots in each frame one above the other, a strap with its ends anchored in a jaw belowthe slots of one of the frames, said strap slidingly coacting with the slots in the upperV jaw to form a loop for holding the bag.
