l This invention relates to ladies handbags, pocketbooks and the like, and has particular reference to a frame therefor which is constructed and arranged for releasably fastening the container element of the handbag, pocketbook and the like thereto so that the same may be readily removed and replaced by a container element of a different style or color.

An object of the invention is to provide a frame of the indicated character having pivotal clamping means for securing the container element of the article thereto which permits of the convenient removal thereof so that a container element of another color may be substituted in order to conform to or harmonize with the color scheme of the costume of the wearer.

Another object of the invention is to provide a frame of the hinged type consisting of hingedly associated sections having swinging movement for opening and closing the handbag, pocketbook and the like and which sections have angulated clamping members pivotally connected therewith for swinging movement for releasably clamping the container element of the article between the clamping members and the frame sections.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of pivotal clamping members having longitudinally extending angulated portions adapted for past dead center movement for releasably securing the container element to the frame.

Another object of the invention is to provide a container element having enlargements or ribs extending longitudinally of the opposite side walls thereof adjacent the opening into the container element and which enlargements or ribs are adapted to engage between the frame sections and the clamping members with the enlargements or ribs disposed above one of the angulated portions of each of said members for securely fastening the container element to the frame so as to prevent unintentional displacement therefrom.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

The invention is illustrated in the drawings in its application to a ladys handbag. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not so limited and is applicable to all types of ladies bags, pocketbooks and the like which utilize a hinged frame for securing the container element in closed relation.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the handbag includes a frame ID consisting of inverted U-shaped sections II and I2 each having a longitudinally extending straight intermediate portion I3 and divergent depending legs I4. The lower ends of the legs are turned in right angular relation to the plane of the legs with the turned portions of corresponding legs of the sections connected together by headed pintles I5 to thereby hingedly connect the sections together for swinging movement for opening and closing the handbag. The intermediate portions I3 of the sections are provided with upstanding latch elements I6 having enlarged or rolled ends I1 adapted to inter-engage for securing the sections in confronting relation and the handbag in closed condition.

In order to provide means for securing the bag or container element I8 of the handbag to the frame sections so as to permit of the release thereof in order to replace the same with a container element of a diiferent color or style, the sections are provided with longitudinally extending clamping members I9 which are pivoted for swinging movement between ears or lugs 20 projecting outwardly in right angular relation from the opposite ends of the intermediate portions I3 of the sections. The said clamping members are spaced from the outer faces of the intermediate portions and are of angular formation in cross-sectional configuration each having a longitudinally extending inwardly directed lower portion 2l and a longitudinally extending upwardly directed portion 22 disposed in rightl angular relation with the lower portion 2|. The said clamping members are formed with pintles 23 extending outwardly from the opposite ends thereof at the juncture of said angulated portions, with the pintles 23 engaging in bearing openings 24 in the ears or lugs 20. Constructed in this manner, the clamping members I9 are arranged for swinging movement from a released position in which the lower portions 2| thereof are disposed above dead center of the pivotal connections of the pintles 23 with the ears or lugs 20 and the upper portions 22 are disposed outwardly of dead center of said pivotal connections to a position in which the lower portions 2| thereof are disposed below dead center of said pivotal connections and the upper portions 22 are disposed inwardly of dead center of said pivotal connection in which latter positions of the clamping members the container element I8 is secured between the intermediate portions I3 of the sections and the longitudinal inner edges of the lower portions 2l of said clamping members.

The bag or container element I8 includes opposite side walls 26 which are formed with upwardly projecting portions 21 terminating at their opposite ends inwardly of the opposite side edges of said walls. The said projecting portions have straight upper edges 28 and each is formed with an outwardly projecting enlargement or rib 29 extending longitudinally thereof parallel with the upper edge 28 and located intermediate said upper edge and the juncture of said projecting portion with the said wall 26. The container element I8 is also formed with oppositely disposed gusseted end walls 30 secured to the opposite vertical edges of the side walls 26 and extending inwardly therebetween so as to form recesses 3I between the folds of said end walls into which recesses the legs I4 of the sections depend with the upwardly extending portions 2I of the side walls 26 disposed between the intermediate portions I3 of said sections and the clamping members I9 when the container element is secured to the frame.

The side walls 26 of the handbag together with the gusseted end walls 30 are composed of inner and outer plies 32 and 33 which are inturned and secured together along the upper edges thereof by lines of stitching 34. The plies are also secured together by lines of stitching 35 and 36 on opposite sides of the enlargements or ribs 29 for securing the same in position.

What is claimed is:

In a ladys handbag, a frame consisting of a pair of inverted U-shaped frame sections each including a longitudinally extending intermedi- 4 ate portion and depending legs at the opposite ends *of said intermediate portion, corresponding legs of said sections being hingedly connected together at the free ends thereof for opening and closing the handbag, said sections having outwardly projecting apertured ears at the opposite ends of said intermediate portions and clamping members for said frame members respectively, said clamping members being of angulated formation in cross-sectional configuration each consisting of an inwardly directed portion and an upwardly directed portion disposed substantially in right angular relation with the inwardly directed portion and having pintles at the juncture of said portions extending outwardly at the opposite ends thereof and pivotally engaging in the apertures in said ears for swinging movement of said portions toward and away from said frame sections, and a container element having oppositely disposed side walls each formed with an upwardly extending projection provided with an enlargement located adjacent the juncture of the projection with the side wall and extending longitudinally thereof and projecting outwardly beyond the outer face of said side wall, said upwardly extending projections engaging between said intermediate portions of the sections and the clamping members respectively for securing said container element to the bag frame by swinging movement of said clamping members for retaining said enlargements of the upwardly extending projections within the angulated portions of said clamping members.
