wninnon Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented- Felo. 15, 1921.
Application filed June 3, 1919. Serial No. 301,411.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W; 'CooHRAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing j'at Catawba, in the county'of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,-such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to wrenches and the primary object of the invention is to V Y in the handle of the wrench so that the same can be conveniently and easily operated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide animproved wrench of the'above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formationof parts, as w1ll be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanylng drawings forming a part thereof in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved wrench,
Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the cover plate removed,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the improved wrench taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a detail transverse section taken on the line H of Fig. 1, I
Fig. 5 is a detail transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the jaws removed from the wrench, and
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the adjusting slide and head removed from the wrench.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l gene'rally indicates the improved wrench, which includes the open frame or body2 having its rear end enlarged to form a handle 3. The side edges of the handle 3 are serrated or milled, as at 4, so that a firm grip may be obtained on the same. The forward end of the frame 2- is provided withthe head 5 which'projectsbe yondthe sides of the frame and extends at an angle of substantially twenty-two degrees thereto. The opposite sides of the head 5 are provided with grooves 6 for the reception of ribs 7 formed on the j aws'8. and 9, which are identical in shape and size. The free forward edges of the head 5 are beveled forwardly in opposite directions and form asubstantially arrow-shaped extension 10, which ,forms means for retaining the jaws against forward movement. The frame 2 has the inner walls thereof cut away from the central portion thereof toward its forward end to define a pair of shoulders 12 and a guide for the head 13 of the adjusting slide 14.
The adjusting slide 14 is provided with the rearwardly extending shank 15 which is slidably received between the inner walls of the handle and the rear end of the shank and is provided with a 1 thumb piece 16, whereby the same may be readily adjusted. The side edges of the thumb piece 16 are provided with grooves 17 for the reception of the inwardly extending ribs 18 formed on the inner walls of the handle. The ribs 18 form a guide track for the thumb piece and prevent relative lateral movement thereof in relation to the handle. The thumb piece 16 has its outer surface serrated so as to prevent the thumb from slipping thereon while the same is being adjusted.
Each of the jaws 8 and 9 includes a body 19 having the rib 7 formed on the inner face thereof, which is slidably fitted in the groove 6, as stated, and the lower surface of the body has secured thereto the downwardly extending shank 20, which is secured adjacent one end of the body and extends at an angle thereto in a direction toward the opposite end of the body. The body also has its inner face directly above the rib 7 beveled inwardly and downwardly, as at. 21, for receiving the arrow-shaped extension 10 of the head 5. The outer edge of the body has the upwardly extending jaw proper 22 formed thereon which is positioned at the opposite end of the body 7 from the shank 20 and the same is formed relatively thick and overhangs the arrow shaped extension 10 of the head 5 and slid ably engages the upper outer edge :of the body of the opposite aw.
The 'head .13 oftheadjusting slide 14. is
provided with longitudinally extending grooves 23 which extend diagonally across the faces of the head 13 in opposite directions and thesegrooves slidably receive the shanks QO of the jaws 8 and 9.
-' As clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the draw- 4 ings, the shanks of the jaws 8 and 9 extend diagonally and inwardly in opposite directions, and "cross each other at the point of connection withthe head 13 of the adjusting slide.
V Upon movement of the' thumb piece 16,
the adjusting slide will. be moved accordingly and'thus the jaws adjusted toward or awayfrom each other according to the I direction in which-the slide'is'moved,
. prevent outward movement of the same in relation 'to each other. The cover platesare held 'in"p0siti0n by suitable fastening ele- 1 ments 26 which extend'through the plates and into the-frame. V 7
From the foregoing description, it can beseen that an improved quick adjusting wrench is provided which can be readily specified.
operated with one hand and in which the jaws arexfirmly' held against movement dur ing operation thereof. V
In practice, I have found that the form V of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred 'to in the above description, as the preferred embodimentfis themosteificient and practical;
yetrealizing the conditions concurrent with the adoptionofmy device willnecessarily vary, I desireto emphasize thatvarious minor changes in details of construction, pI'O'pOIiHOIl' and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sac rificing any of the'advantages ofany vention as set forth.
What I claim 'asne'w' is:
r f 0 A' wrench including a body having a head formedonone end thereof, the head having a guide extending transversely across the median longitudinal dimension of the 'flbody and disposed at an acute angle thereto, grooves formed in the opposite faces of saidhead, jaws slidably mounted on said head for movementtransversely of said body provided Iwith'diagonally extending disposed shanks, ribs formed on said jaws and slidably engaging said grooves, a longitudinally extending adjusting memher, a head on the outer end of said adjusting member, said head having oppositely.
directed inclined grooves formed ,in the faces thereof, said inwardly extending 'di-,
agonally disposed shanks slidably received in the grooves formed in the head of the adjusting member, as and for the purpose In testimony whereof'I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
