Description
May 19, 1925. 1,538,790 J. 5. FORNEY ugones Filed June 20, 1924 M L/mv 8, F52?? E yam WIT Y W ATTORNEY Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES JACOB S. FORNEY, OF MANNINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
TONGS.
Application filed June 20, 1924.
To all ac/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jaoon S. FoRNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of lVest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tongs, and contemplates a structure primarily intended for use by blacksmiths for clamping and holding bits while. sharpening the latter, although general utility is contemplated by the clamp.
In carrying out the invention I provide a tool of the class in question, wherein the bit or the like can be easily associated with the tool, and conveniently held associated therewith while being sharpened or otherwise dealt with, the tool being further designed to facilitate separation of the bit therefrom when desired.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of tongs including a pair of pivoted handles formed with cooperating jaws, and including an adjustable pivot or fulcrum whereby the tongs may be used with different size tools.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description isread in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
1n the drawings: forming part of this application, like numerals of re'l erei'ice indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation showing how the tongs are used.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
rigure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2 showing the posit-ion of the movable aw for clamping a tool.
n'igure i is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the position of the movable jaw when used to force the bit or tool from the tongs.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of one part of the tool showing the slot for the adjustable pivot.
The tongs forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a pair of handles 10 and 11 respectively, the former being formed with an enlarged elongated end por- Serial No. 721,343.
In practice the shank of the bit or other implement 17 is positioned in the slot 13 of the fixed jaw 12, in which position the shank is arranged between the forward end 01'' this jaw and the movable jaw 14. When the handle 11 is moved in the direction of the handle 10, the jaw 14 moves upon its pivot in a forward direction, and thereby effectively clamps the shank of the bit or other implement as shown in Figure 1. The bit 17 being clamped in this manner allows the tongs to be convruiiently handled while sharpening" the bit or dealing with the latter in any other manner, and. the possibility of dropping the bit or implement from the tongs is materially reduced. When it is desired to separate the bit or implement 17 from the tongs, it is only necessary to swing the handle 11 in the direction away from the handle 10 during which time the lug 18 enters the slot 13 of the fixed jaw and thereby forces the bit or other implement 17 from the aw. It will be further noted that while the tongs are used for supporting the implement 17 the shank of the latter reposes upon the lug 18 as illustrated in Figure 1.
lVhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may he resorted to when desired. as fall Within the seope'ot' What is claimed.
What I claim is:
longs comprising a pair of handles, one of said handles being provided With an enlarged elongated slotted portion projecting forwardly therefrom and having an end Wall, a jaw arranged substantially at a right ann'le to the eorrespondingend of the handle and pii'oted within said slot, said jaW cooperating with said end wall of the el0ngated portion for clamping an object therebetween, a lug projecting from said jaw "to assist in supporting the object engaged the tongs upon movement of the last mentioned handle in a particular direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa- 20 ture.
JACOB S. FORNEY.
