AN. PHoraumoG/ww/c ca Mx (aseonuf mams) 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER E. MALMSTRM AND PAUL E. DUMMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY POCKET-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,742, dated March 11, 1873.
' To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat we, PETER E. MALMsTRM and PAUL E. DUMMER, both of the city, county, and State of 'New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Pocket-Hook for Watches and other articles; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyv ing drawing forming part of this specication, in which drawing- Y Figure l represents a horizontal section of a watch-pocket provided with our safety-hook. Fig. 2 is a front view of the safety-hook detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a safety pockethook formed at the end of a piece of wire that is bent in the forxn of the letter L and provided with two eyes in such a manner that said L-shaped wire can be readily secured to the inner surface cfzthe lining of a pocket, while the hook is passed through a hole in said lining, and is, consequently, situated inside the pocket 5 and that, when the L-shaped wire and its hook have been thus secured, the,
ring of a watch or of any other article can be passed in or out of the hook with ease and facility by the person wearing the garment containing the safety-pocket, while any attempt to withdraw the watch or other article clandestinely is instantly felt and detected.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a hook, which is formed at the end of an L shaped wire, B. This wire is provided with two eyes, a b,-so that-it can be readily and conveniently fastened to the inner surface of the lining of a pocket by a few stitches of thread passed through said eyes and round the corner ofthe L-shaped shank of said wire.
The point of the hook is slightly curvedA outward and the hight of thisfcurve touches the shank ot' the L-shaped wire, or nearly so, the hook being made yielding so that the ring of a watch or other article can be readily forced into or out of the saine. The elasticity of the hook A is increased by forming the eye a with two coils, lying one behind the other like a spiral spring. (See Fig. l.)
ln order to secure our safety-hook in a pocket, a hole is cut into the lining to allow the hook to pass, while the L-shaped-wire B is secured to the inner surface of said lining, as shown in Fig. l, the hook being situated a convenient distance below the mouth of the pocket.
When the ring of a watch is passed into the Vhook A, as shown, all attempts to withdraw said watch clandestinely will fail, while the person wearing the garment which contains the safety-pocket can readily slide the watch back sufficiently to disengage the ring from the hook. e
It is obvious that our" safety-hook can be used for pocket-books or other articles, provided such articles are furnished with a ring to be slipped on our hook.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The safety pocket-hook B, formed with eyes a and b for securing it to the lining of a pocket, as described, a-nd with a hook, A, at its end, for extending through the lining into the pocket for receiving the article to be secured therein, as set forth, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
