UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT EPPIDE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
WATCH: PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,842, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed February 14, 1891. Serial No- 381500. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT EPPLE, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in atch-Protectors; and I declare the following to be aspect fication thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, like letters indicating like parts.
Figure 1 shows the location of my device upon a watch-chain worn in the usual manner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention and of a watch-chain and watch to which the same is applied, the watch-pocket being shown in section on line r :0 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my watch protector with the spiral hook extended and the outer case in central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device with the spiral hook withdrawn in the case.
My invention is a device adapted to be attached to a watch-chain to protect the watch from theft; and it consists of a cylindrical rod having a head at one end and a spirallybent wire hook at the other, in combination with a tubular case within which said rod is rotatable, and having aclosed end with a slot therein through which said spiral hook may be advanced or withdrawn, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawings, A represents a cylindrical rod having the head Bat one end and ashoulder a at the opposite end. A wire 0 is spirally bent and affixed to the shouldered end of he rod A. The outer end of the wire forms a sharp hook.
D is a tubular case having the closed end E, in which is the slot Z). This tube has an interior shoulder c. The case D has a ring F at one side by which it is attached to the watch-chain G.
By turning the rod A the spirally-bent hook C is screwed out through the slot 1) of the case D, as seen in Fig. 3, and its sharp end thus enters and engages with the cloth H of the garment, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the watch cannot be taken from the pocket without disengaging the device or tearing the garment. By turning the rod Ain the reverse direction the spirally-bent hook C is withdrawn through the slot Z) into the case D, as seen in Fig. i, and consequently does not engage with the clothing nor interfere with the removal of the watch.
It is thus evident that my watch-protector can be adjusted to secure the watch in position or not, as may be preferred.
I claim as a new and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved protector herein described, consisting of a rod having a spirally-bent wire hook at one end and rotatably mounted in a case having an end with a slot through which said spiral hook is capable of being extended from the case or withdrawn into the case by the rotation of said rod, substantially as specified.
ALBERT EPPLE.
