Description

UNITE ST NELSON B. COOPER, OF LIBERTY, INDIANA.
lMPRQVE-IMEMT IN WAGON-BODIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent-No. h35-f779, dated February 11., 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELsoN B. COOPER, of Liberty, in the county of Union and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Vagon-Bodies, of which the following is aspecifi cation My invention consists of anovel construe tion of posts, in combination with bed-pieces and other parts of a wagon-body.
In the aecompanyin g drawing, Figure l is a top View of a Wagon-body With my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the end posts.
In constructing my wagon-body the bed plate or sill B is made of wood, but I make the posts A of iron, coming down so as to embrace both sides of the sill B, and be bolted thereon, as shown in the drawing. The bottom of the posts also embrace the cross-bars O at the bottom of the wagon-body and are bolted thereto, as seen in Fig. 3. The tops of the posts have rings or loops 1), Fig. 1, to receive the stakes in the usual manner, and the rear posts are provided with braces E, as seen in Fig. 3. The side boards F are received into grooves, as seen in Fig. and the end gates G or boards enter similar grooves, and are also provided with hooks, as seen in Fig. 1, to hold the sides of the body from spreading.
The above construction of wagon-body is very strong and durable, and yet not very expensive.
It may be mentioned that the side boards, end gates, and even the bottom board are all held by the posts Without being fastened thereto.
If in time the wooden parts wear out or are otherwise injured the iron posts are good for a new set of wooden parts, thus affording a new body at small expense.
I do not, broadly, claim grooves for'receiving the end gates and side boards.
Havingdeseri bed my improvement, I claim-- The rear posts having the braces E in the same piece, and being provided with grooves or notches for embracing the sills B, the crossbar 0, the side boards F, and the end gates G, and also with a ring or loop, 1), for the stakes, substantially as set forth.
NELSON B. COOPER.
