IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-STANDARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,716, dated July 11,1876;Uapplication filed June 1'2, 1876.

To all whom Iit may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB METZ, of Vernon, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tagen-Standards, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish improved standards or stakes for the holsters of Wagons, which shall be so constructed that they may be readily and quickly attached and detached, which shall be strong and durable, simple in construction, and inexpensive in manufacture, enabling a pair ot' holsters to be ironed with much less labor, and at much less expense, than when they are ironed in the usual way.

Ihe invention consists in the castings bolted to the bolster, and the base ot' the standard or stake, connected with the said castings by tongues and grooves, and with the bolster by a spring-bolt, as hereinafter fully described.

A represents a bolster, to the opposite sides ofthe ends ot' which are bolted iron castings B. The upper ends ofthe castings B project a little above the upper side ofthe b'olster A, to receive the base U of the standard between them. The sides ofthe base O are connected with the upper ends ot' the castings B by tongues and grooves, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The grooves may be formed in the outer sides of the base C, and the tongues upon the castings B, as shown in Fig. 2; or the upper ends of' the castings B may be flush with the top ot' the bolster A, and have grooves in their outer sides to receive the tongues formed upon 'the downwardly-projecti-ng sides ot' the base C, as shown in Fig. 4.

The base C may have an iron standard or stake, D, formed solid with it, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or it may be made hollow, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to receive a wooden standard or stake, which is secured to it by a bolt.

The base C is made with a solid outwardlyprojecting' brace or shoulder, which has a llole formed in its lower side to receive a bolt, E, to enter a hole in the upper side of the bolster A, to lock the said base in place. rIhe bolt E is held down by a spring, F, placed above its upper end in the hole ot' the base O. To the upper end of the bolt E is attached a wire, G, that passes up through the spring F, and through a small hole in the base C, and terminates in a ring, to enable the bolt E to be readily drawn up into the base O, so that the base can be easily and quickly attached and detached when desired Having thus described lnyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent rIhe castings B, bolted to the bolster, and the base C, connected with the castings B by tongues and grooves, and with the bolster by a spring-bolt, E F G, substantially as herein shown and described.
