AM. mam-umoammlc ca MY. (osaomzls PRncEss) NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L H. MOSIER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO BREWSTER &
COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KING-BOLTS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,255, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. H. MOSIER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in King-Bolt for Platform Carriages, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of a portion of a carriage illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is' a dctail section of the same, taken through the line 50 a, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of kin g-bolts for platform-carriages so as to make them neat, strong, and durable, and, at the same time, give a smooth finish to the top plate of the front bed of the top carriage. head formed upon the king-bolt, and the corresponding recess formed in the top plate of the front bed of the top carriage, said crosshead and recess being so formed as to correspond and leave the upper surface of the cross-head flush with the upper surface of the said top plate, giving a smooth finish; and in the bolts, in combination with the cross-head of the king-bolt and with the top plate, the bed, and the bottom plate of the top carriage, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the front bed of the top carriage. B is the top plate of the front bed A. C is the bottom plate of the front bed A. D is the kin gbolt, which passes down through a hole in the top plate B, front bed A, and bottom plate 0. Upon the upper end of the king-bolt D is formed a cross-head, d, which is made to correspond with the shape of the top plate B, and
The invention consists in the crossf is let into a recess formed in the upper side of the middle part of the top plate B, which recess is made of such a depth that the upper surface of the head d may be finished flush with the surface of the top plate B, thus giving a perfectly-smooth finish to the upper side of said top plate. E are two bolts, which pass through the end parts of the cross-head d of theking-bolt D, through'th'e top plate B, the bed A, and bottom plate 0; and their heads are countersunk into the said cross-head, so as to be flush with its upper surface. The bolts E are secured in place by nuts screwed upon their lower ends. Upon the lower side of the bottom plate C, around the hole through which the king-bolt D passes, is formed a socket, C, sufficiently large to receive the thimble formed upon the frog F, and through which the king-bolt D passes, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the lower end of the king-bolt D is screwed a nut, G, which is secured in place and kept from working 011' by a small transverse bolt, H, passing through a hole in the said nut G and in the said bolt D, and which is secured in place by a small nut screwed upon its forward end.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The combination with the bed A of the curved cross-headedking-bolt D d,recessed top plate B, bottom plate C, and bolts E E, as and for the purpose described.
JOHN L. H. MOSIER.
