.eppeatnn filed September' 20, v191'?. Serial No. 192,261.
Be it known that l, iloenrn Dsrnii, a citizen or the United States, residing in Hamilton, in the county liutlerand State of Ohio, have invented new and usefnl ilmprovement in Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general te containers and has more particular reference to the type ot containers called doubletita that is to say, having two or more pairs of interengagingfriction seat walls forming substantially an hermetic closure.`
A principal object of the .present invention is the provision o' a container of this character which will provide a maximum opening at the open end of the container when the cover is removed and which will prevent the trapping of an appreciable amount of material within the container after the contents are poured out.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container oi' the character described, from which the cover may be readwhich will permit the ltightly in place Without ily pried with a suitable tool or instrument;
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a container, as described, cover to be forced danger of distorting the can or the cover.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing, y
Figure 1 is a'transverse sectional view of a top portion of a container body, embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the cover.
Fig. Sis a similar view, showing the cover in place.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial section, to
kshow the details of' construction.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, have shown a container body 10 of any usual or preferred general construction and having anannulus- 11, double seamed to it at 12 to the top. The annulus 11 is de pressed just inwardly of the inner face of Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented 3, M92@ the container body to provide a pair of opposed `triction seat walls 13 and 14. The portion of the annulus forming the wall 13 1s preferably in contact with the inner face of the body of the container. he cover generally indicated at 15 is provided with depression forming friction seat walls 1,6 and 1T, adapted to Contact with the friction seat walls 13 and 14, when the depression ot' the cover is forced down into the depression of the annulus. ln locating the friction seat walls 13 and 14, as close to the inner face of the body as possible, the trapping of the material in the can, between the depression of the body Wall, is reduced to a minimum and the contents may be poured from a cank or container embodying my present invention, leaving little orno material in the can when the pouring is completed. The edge 18-ofthe cover is preferably bent under and turned upon itselic to provide a double sti fold, extending slightly beyond the edge of a double seam, thereby providing for the reception of the prying od tool or implement to permit the ready opening of the container.
Furthermore in locating the friction seat walls near or against the bod wall of the container, these Walls are stiiiiined and the cover firmly hel-d in place with a substantially hermetic seal contact of the Walls 16 and 17 with the walls 13 and 14.
Furthermore in locating the friction seat walls close against the body of the container, the rigidity of the. body is utilized in the greatest degree to resist pressure identical to the closing of the can'after packing, little danger of the annulus or cover bending resulting from this construction.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that` various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
l claim:
A can body having a pair of opposed lfriction seat Walls extending inwardly from its open end and having the outer of said Walls located in contact against the side Wall of said body, whereby said wall is strengthened and maintained in undistorted cylindrical form Jfor engagement by a corresponding friction Wall of the cover, and a friction cover having a pair of friction seat Walls disposed Within the said opposed friction seat Walls of the body.
