TOBACCO Box.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. HOTHERSALL,

a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco Boxes, of which is a specification. My present invention relates to containers of the tobacco ly to a construction involving the use of an hermetic closure and a supplemental hinge cover adapted to be used after the hermetic closure has been opened and during the time that the contents are being consumed.

The main object of the invention is the provision of means for hinging the supplemental cover to the container, and this without interfering with the attachment of the permanent, or hermetic closure.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a hinge construction in a container of this character which will be inexpensive, both from the standpoint of the material required and the manufacturing operations involved.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection drawings, discloses thereof. 7

Referring to the drawings,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobacco box in which my invention is embodied;

Fig. 2 is a thereof;

Fig. 3 is a partial detail section showing the body hingel member and permanent closure in spaced relationship prior to the seaming operation; and

Fig. 4 is a partial rear view, showing the .pintle member prior to the application of the hinge cover.

The box body 21 is of the usual flat type and is adapted to be closed by means of a permanent closure 22 seamed to the flange of the body, as indicated at 23. Said closure is centrally scored, as indicated at 24, and is adaptedto be opened by the consumer by tearing or cutting away the material along said score lines in any suitablemanner to provide access to the contents. A hinged cover 25 is em loyed to close the box after the hermetic c osure has been opened and a preferred embodiment partial front-toback section box type and more particularwith the accompanying the hinged connection with saidcover is provided in the following manner. v hinge forming, or pintle, member 26, rolled at its lower edge and having protruding false wire portions 27, is interfolded in the seam 23, as shown at the right in Fig. 2. The upper portion of said member is formed with a flange 28 adapted to fit over the body flange 29 and to be tightly crimped between said body flange and the cover flange 31.

The lower rolled edge 32 of said member is preferably bent outwardly a suitable distance from the body of the box, as shown in Fig. 2, the extended end portions 27 thereof being engaged by depending lugs 33v formed in the flange 34 of the cover 25, said lugs being bent around the false wire pintle formed by the hinge member 26, as hereinbefore'described. i

While I have, in the present instance, 7 shown a separate hinge forming member 26, it will, of course, be obvious that said member could be formed as an extension either of the box body or permanent closure flanges within the purview of the invention.

At the front of the cover 25, I preferably provide a lip 35 depending from the flange 34 and bent inwardly, as indicated at 36, to provide a sna fastening adapted to hold said cover in c osed position.

The false wire'portion 27 of the member 26 could, if desired, be an actual wire held withinthe rolled edge of said member 26, or held in any other suitable manner.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent'that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim: 100

1. A container for tobacco or the like, comprising a body, an hermetic closure seamed thereto, a hinge cover, and a hinge part projecting from the seam joining the hermetic closure and body and adapted to 105 engage a hinge part on said cover.

2. A. container for tobacco or the like, comprising a body, an hermetic closure seamed thereto and adapted to have a portion thereof torn away to open the container,

a hinge cover for closing the container after the hermetic closure has been Opened, and a hinge part projecting from the seam joining .the hermetic closure and the body and adapted for attachment to said cover. A container for tobacco or the like, comprising a body, an hermetic closure permanently secured thereto and having a scored section adapted to be torn away to open the container, a hinge cover for closing the container after said section has been removed, and means depending from the 'oint between said hermetic closure and body and forming a pintle for a hinge connecting said cover to the container.

4. A container for tobacco or the like, comprising a body, an hermetic closure seamed thereto, a separate hinge forming member incorporated in the seam between said closure and body, and a supplementary 20 closure hinged to said member.
