To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MORRIS SHALI'IA and PINCUS SHALITA, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Friction-Top Can, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
This invention relates to sheet metal cans or containers and has particular reference to the construction of the tops or covers of such containers.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide for the rim of a can a top having a peculiar construction of friction flange having several peculiarities, among which is an annular pocket for the reception of a modicum or quantity of the fluid contents of the can, such pocket and any liquid which may be received and held thereby forming an efficient liquid seal for the can.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawing forming a part of this specification.
The figure is a vertical sectional view of a can showing one form of our improvement.
The several parts of this device may be made of any suitable materials, and the rela tive sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings we show at 10 the body of a can of any suitable form having a bottom 11. The edge of the bottom is connected to the lower edge of the body 10 by any suitable means known to the can manufacturing art and forming preferably a roll or bead 12. To the upper end or edge of the body 10 is secured a sheet metal rim 13, the line of connection forming another roll or bead 14. From said bead 14 the rim extends downwardly within the end of the can body; thence inwardly toward the center of the can and thence is bent upwardly at a slight inclination from the vertical forming a friction wall 15 of conical formation. The lower ortion of this wall 15 is flared outwardly s lightly at 16 where it merges into the rounded or curved bottom 17 of that portion of the rim which forms a gutter 18. the rim 13 extends inwardly from the upper edge of the friction wall 15 in a substantially horizontal direction forming a flat or slightly convex contact surface 19, and the extreme edge of such portion is bent thence downwardly forming a flange 20 whose upper wall provides a friction wall which is approximately vertical.
The ren'iaining principal part of the device consists of a top or lid 21 having a pcculiar rim construction including a downwardly extending flange having two lines or points of contact 22 and 23 upon the friction wall 15 on the outer surface of the inner portion of the rim 13. These two contact portions of the flange are spaced more or less one above the other, the metal of the flange being folded or crimped outwardly forming a hollow rib 24, the hollow of the rib and space between the contact portions 22 and 23 forming an open pocket 25 of annular form surrounding the upwardly projecting portion of the rim. The extreme lower edge of the part 23 of the top flange is gripped tightly upon the flaring portion 16 of the rim and is thereby caused to be flared outwardly as shown at 26. That portion of the top shown at 27 and just within the flange portion 22 conforms to and snugly fits upon the upper rim portion 19, and thence inside of the part 27 there is formed a downwardly extending shoulder 28 adapted to bind snugly upon the flange 20 of the rim. The top is thence bentinwardly and upwardly to a plane approximating the horizontal plane of the top rim portion 27. The crimping of the rim and top members as herein described and shown renders them exceedingly strong and stifl" and hence well suited for their purposes.
lVith the top 21 forced into the position indicated, a number of independent points or lines of contact are provided between the top and the rim as follows: a, between the flange 23, 26 and the friction wall 15. 16;
7), between the flange member 22 and the upper edge of the wall 15; 0, between the horizontal top 19 of the rim and the member 27 of the top; and d, between the shoulder 28 and the flange 20. Any internal presany upheaval of the material within the can tending to lift the lid will tend to cause the flange portions 22 and 23 to grip the tighter upon the points or lines an and b by a sort of bell crank lever action. As above intimated, any liquid contents of the can, such as a light oil or the like, creeping outwardly through the joint along the lines (Z, 0 and 7) will be caught in the pocket 25 and constitute a liquid seal, such liquid in all probability becoming gummed or solidified when trapped in stagnant condition in such pocket. The excessively tight frictional contact along the line (a in the broad surface contact of the flaring portions of the structure above described will positively prevent'any leakage outwardly from the pocket 25 irrespective of the character of the liquid in the container. The rib 24 formed upon the outer flange of the top has another important function. namely, the provision of means for removing the top by a tool applied into the gutter 18 and between the rib 2i and the bead 14. No part of the structure of the container, however, projects in such a manner as to interfere with the safe and convenient stacking of the containers for shipping or storing purposes.
\Ve claim: 1. The combination with a metal container rim bent to provide upwardly and down- 'ardly disposed spaced contact surfaces, of
a top therefor having a downwardly projectmg shoulder having frictional contact with said rim downwardly projecting contact flange having frictional contact with said upwardly projecting rim surface both above and below said pocket.
2. The herein described metal can top having a downwardly projecting friction flange bent outwardly to form a rib lying substantially in a horizontal plane, the walls of the rib being spaced one above the other forming a pocket, and the portions of the flange adjacent said rib walls extending in substantially the same direction on opposite sides of said pocket.
