IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-LEAF TURNERS.
g Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,367, dated December 31, 1872; antedated December To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW M. ERNsBER- GER, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State or' Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Music-Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section ofthe same 5 and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to music-stands; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices for turning the leaves of the music automatically, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents the base-bar of the stand, B the central upright, and (l the feet, which, when the apparatus is placed on an instrument or on an ordinary music-stand, elevates the bar A sufficiently to enable the leaf-turning mechanism to work freely. The feet are recessed at a to iit the ridge usually formed on music-stands to prevent the leaves from slipping. D designates horizontal wire arms having vertical extensions d, which are itted into a chamber, cZ, ofthe upright B, and encircled by springs E, arran ged to throw the arms D from the right to the left of the standard B. On the outer end of each arm is formed a loop, F, to which are attached two ne wires or cords, g, which are thence carried up to the top of the upright in an oblique manner and connected to a wire frame or bracket, g1, having eyes g2. G designates a springrod arranged to hold the music on the stand. H H indicate a pair of spring-catches, consisting of a piece of elastic wire bent around a pin, h, inserted in a recessed and slotted block, h', secured to the under side of the bar A, near the right-hand end thereof. In the arrangement of the music each of the leaves is insert ed between the two cords or wires g. Afterward, the arms D are inserted between the catches and the leaves turned by a quick snap of the lower catch, which is provided with a thumb-piece, t'. The catch H is constructed with an angular projection, i2, which extends down behind a shoulder, i3, ot' the catch H. When the arms D are inserted between the catches all but the outermost arm fall behind the angular projection i2, while said outermost arm iills the space between the point of said angular projection and the elbow j of the catch H. Vhenever the catch H is pressed down or snapped quickly the iirst arm D escapes, and one' leaf of music is instantly turned. The space above the elbow jis at the same time filled by another arm, and so on. k represents a recess in the board A to enable the catch H to be raised. L designates a springclasp having au oblique arm, l, which may be adjusted on the upright B by means of a loop, l', and is designed for attaching the apparatus to a music-stand.
This apparatus may be used for turning the leaves of any kind of pamphlets or small books.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The spring-catch H having the projection i2, and spring-catch H having the shoulder i3, and elbow j, in combination with the springing arms D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The adjustable spring-clasp L having the oblique arm Z and loop l', substantiallyyas specified. In testimonythat I claims the above I haue hereunto subscribed my name inthe presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW M. ERNSBERGER.
