BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,948, dated August 2O,` 1895.
Application tiled May 25, 1895- Zo all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MELVINA BEYER, of Philadelphia, in the county of PhiladelphiaJ and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Book-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved book-holder which is simple and durable in construction, more especially designed for conveniently supporting a book'while reading the same, and arranged to permit of conveniently folding the several parts of the holder, so that the latter takes up but very little room when not in use.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same as folded, and Fig. 3 is an invertedplan view of the same.
The improved book-holder is provided with a base A, preferably made of wood and adapted to rest on a table or other convenient support. On the sides of the base A and near the rear end thereof are arranged the pivots B fora rest O, preferably made Ushaped, and fulcrumed at its side arms C on the said pivots B, so that the rest C can be swung upwardly and rearwardly into an inclined position, with the extreme outer ends of the side bars C resting against stop-pins D, secured to the sides of the base A close to the pivots B. The rest C is of such construction that it can be readily swung downward in alignment with the base A, to fold up with the latter in a very little space.
On the front end of the base A are arranged leaf-holders E, each preferably made of a single piece of wire slightly curved and formed with an angular offset E', mounted to turn in the base A, so that the two leaf-holders can be conveniently swung down on the front of the base A and into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The rear end of the base A is formed on its underside with a cut-out portion A' for re- Serial No. 550,637. (No model.)
ceiving the arms F, pivoted at F to the base A, and adapted to form an extension-base for the main base A. Thus the arms F can be readily swung outward into the position shownin Fig. 1, so that a heavy book supported on the base A and leaning against the inclined rest C is not liable to upset the base A, owing to the extension-arms F. When the book-rest is not in use the said arms are folded in the cut-out portion, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.
When it is desired to support a very large book on the holder I preferably provide the rest C with an extension-rest O2, likewise made U-shaped and pivotally connected at its side arms C3 by pivots B with thel side arms C of the rest C. Each side arm 03 is formed with a notch C4, adapted to engage a stop-pin D held on the extending side arms C', so that the extension-rest C2 can be swung upward and rearward in alignment with the rest C, to form anextension thereof, as plainly indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the said extension-rest C2 can be swung in an opposite direction, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when it is desired to fold the several parts of the holder for storing the latter. Thus it will be seen that the holder can be very cheaply manufactured, conveniently extended for any sized book, and readily folded up whenever desired, so as to take up very little space.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents#- 1. A book holder, comprising a base formed at its under side and at the rear end thereof with a cut-out portion, arms pivoted to the said base at the cut-out portion, to form an extension for the base, a U-shaped rest pivoted with its side arms on the sides of the base, stop pins held in the sides of the base, to engage the said side arms so as to limit their swinging motion, and leaf holders mounted to turn in the front end of the base, and adapted to engage the leaves of a book to hold the latter open, substantially as shown and described.
2. A book holder, comprising a base formed at its under side and at the rear end thereof with a cut-out portion, arms pivoted to the said base at the cut-out portion, to form anl ICG extension for the base, a U-shaped rest pivoted with its side arms on the sides of the base, stop pins held in the sides of the said base, to engage the said side arms so as to limit ltheir swinging motion, leaf:l holders mounted to turn in the front end of the base, and adapted to engage the'leaves of a book to hold the latter open, a U-shaped extension rest pivoted with its side arms to the side arms of the said main rest, and stop pins heid on the said rest, to hold the extension rest in alignment with the main rest, as set forth.
3. A book holder, comprising a base having pivotally mounted at one edge leaf-holding rods and having pivotally mounted at the opposite ends of the edges adjacent to the side having the leaf retaining pins a U-shaped book support which is capable of swinging to embrace the leaf-retaining pins, substantially as described.
