. JOHN W. ROTHENBERGER, OF SYRACUSE, INDIANA ANTI-MOUTH-BREATHING DEV-ICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented }[ay 11, 1920,
Application filed May 29, 1919. Serial No. 300,574.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. Ro'rHEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Kosclusko and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Anti-Mouth-Breathing Device, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices for preventing persons breathing through their mouths while asleep, the primary obj ect being to provide an appliance to be applied to the persons chin to prevent the mouth being opened while the person is sleeping, thus preventing through the mouth.
A second object of the invention is to provide an appliance to correct the habit of mouth breathing while asleep and which may be worn without discomfort to the wearer.
Another important object of this invention is to provide an appliance of this character which is constructed from a single sheet of material and which includes a head harness for retaining the device in position on the persons face in such a manner as to prevent the mouth being opened while the person is sleeping.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this nature which is strong and durable and efficient in use and which when applied to the face of the wearer will not slide or slip about and thus chafe or irritate the face.
Another object of the. invention resides in the provision of a device of this general character which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost.
lVith the above and other general objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the combinations of elements, constructions, formations and -arrangements, and general assemblage, the details of which will be hereinafter specifically referred to and recited in the sub-joined claim, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in operative position on a person;
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the head harness of the device on the wearer;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device breathing looking into the same and having the head harness removed F igxet is a plan view of the device; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
My improved appliance consists of a chin plate 5 which is concavo-conveX in cross section to conform to the wearers chin and is provided witha forwardly extending longitudinal flange 6 provided with a slot 7 at each end thereof with which one end of the supporting strap 8 carried by ahead harness that includes a band 10 and crossed crown straps 11 which are secured to the band at diametrically opposite points, is detachably engaged.
Formed integrally with the plate 5 at the transverse end thereof and extending rearwardly of the same at a slight incline is a pair of divergent jaw receiving bars 11', these bars 11 being transversely curved or concavo-convex in cross section to conform to the jaws of the wearer and are slightly curved longitudinally to conform to the facial outline. Slots 12 are formed in these bars 11 at diametrically opposite points, one pair being disposed slightly above the other. Depending from each end of one of the crown straps 11 is a pair of elastic side straps 13 each having one end detachably engaged with any one of the openings in the side bars.
Heads 1% extend laterally from the outer face of each of the side bars at their rear ends which are engageable with fastenings carried by the free ends of a pair of divergent elastic straps 15 secured to the connecting strap 16 between the band 10 and the crown straps 11.
In the use of the device the band 10 is applied to the persons head as indicated in Fig. 1. and the strap 8 adjusted to cause the plate 5 and bars 11 to fit closely against the chin and jaws of the wearer and the divergent straps 15 then engaged with the resilient head let.
A buckle is carried by one end of the head band 10 for engagement with the opposite end of the same, thus the head band may also be adjusted to different diameters.
This embodiment of the invention is considered the preferred construction, but it will be understood that the same may be modified in many respects, and that my limits of modification are governed only by the sub-joined claim.
What is claimed is An anti-mouth breathing device comprising a chin plate adapted to receive the chin of the patient, said chin plate having a forwardly extending flange projecting outwardly from the chin, side bars extending rearwardly from the opposite ends of the plates and vertically disposed to lie close to the Wearers jaWs and means for retaining the plates in position and comprising a head band, a pair of transversely disposed straps connected to the head band at their extremities and at either side of the head, a pair of forward supporting straps connected JOHN W. ROTHENBERGER.
