A. L. BRITTON.
PAGE PROTEGTOR.
. Patented Oct. 19, 1886.
N. PETERS. Pholo-Uthngnpher. Wa'shington. 0.5.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREXV L. BRITTON; OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FACE-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-351,248, dated October 19, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. BRITTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city andcounty of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Face-Protectors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, and accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a faceprotector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a front view thereof on an enlarged scale, a portion thereof being broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a face-protector embodying coverings for the nose, cheeks, and cars.
It also consists of the nose-covering having a frame of flexible or pliable material, whereby it may be bent to conform to the anatomy of the nose and firmly retained in position.
It further consists 'of means for adjusting the protector to the dimensions of the face.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a nose-covering. l3 designates cheek-coverings, and G designates ear coverings or muffs.
The nose-covering is composed of a frame, D, of flexible wire, and a piece, E, of suitable fabric connected therewith, both shaped to conform in a measure to the general contour of the nose.
The cheek-coverings consist of pieces F, of suitable fabric, of the form of pads, adapted to rest against and cover the checks of the wearer, said pieces being provided with buckles G, whereby, by means of straps H on the sides of the nose-covering A, the cheek-coverings may be connected with the nose-covering, said buckles and straps also providing for adj usting said coverings in relation to each other, according to the dimensions of the face of the wearer.
The ear coverings or muffs are formed of frames J, adapted to encircle the ears, and pads or pieces K of fabric attached to said frames. Attached to the coverings are straps L, whereby they may be secured to the head of the wearer, or in lieu of said straps there may be employed a curved spring which is fitted around the head, similar to those earmuffs in common use.
\Vhen the protector is in position shown in Fig. 1, the nose, cheeks, and ears are kept warm and protected from cold and severe weather, the device, as is evident, being particularly serviceable in winter.
When the nose-covering is placed on the nose, it may be bent so as to slightly pinch the same, thus being prevented from dropping from position, as well as conforming in a measure to the anatomy of the nose. As the cheek pieces or coverings are removable from the nose'covering, the latter may be disconnected from the former and the straps H extended or lengthened to pass around the head and be tied, in order to hold the covering in position.
In order to prevent flapping of the cheekcoverings, there are secured thereto straps M, which are adapted to be tied under the chin of the wearer.
The fabric employed in the formation of the protector is cloth, velvet, 850., with linings of flannel, 85c.
WVhen the protector is not required for service, it may be folded in compact form and carried in a satchel, the pocket, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A face-protector composed of anose-covering, cheek-coverings, and ear-muffs, the said nose-covering and earmuffs having a wire frame and fabric covering, the frame of the nose-covering being flexible and adapted to be conformed to the shape of the nose, the cheekcoverings being connected to the nose-covering by straps and buckles, and the car-muffs being hinged to the cheek-coverings, all substantially as described.
2. A faceprotector composed of the flexible frame D, with fabric covering E, cheekcovcrings B, with chin-strap M, ear-muffs O, hinged to cheek-coverings B, and fasteningbands L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a face-protector, the combination of a flexible nose-covering connected to cheek-coverings by straps and buckles, ear-muffs, a fastening band, and a chinstrap, all substantially as described.
4. A face-protector having cheek-coverings connected to a nose covering by means of straps and buckles, whereby the said cheekcoverings may be adjusted, substantially as described.
\Vitnesses: ANDVV. L. BRITTON.
