THOMAS 3'. WHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
Application filed June 24, 1911'. Serial No. 635,065.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxing-Masks, of which the following is a specification. 1
My present invention relates to face order to operate as acushion, together with means for securely holding the mask inpo- Siti0I1.','. v r
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the mask and its adjustable head harness complete. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the mask. Fig. 3 is a detailsection, on an'enlarged scale, taken on line 33 of Fig.2, and Fig.4 is a side elevation of the mask frame removed.
Referring now to these figures, my improved mask comprises a relatively stiff metal'frame-5 as shown particularly in Fig.
provided with a 'lowercentral opening '8 wh1ch, together with the openings 7, facilitate breathing, the upper openings 6 permitv ting sight. throughthe mask. These openings 6, 7 and 8-also serve to lighten the weight'ofthe frame, as do theseries of slotted openings 911 the lowermost portion 10 of the 'frame'which extends around and under the chin in order to protect the jaw. The side portions 11 of frame 5 are extended rearwardly a distance sufficient to cover and protect the ears, and are provided with upper and lower slots 12 and 13, respectively, toreceive the ends of adjusting straps 14 and 15, respectively, these straps passing through loops of a pad piece 16, as shown in Fig. 1, and designed to befplaced against the back of the head. The frame 5 is also provided with a central upstanding and rearwardly curved extension 17 having an aperture 18- to receive 'oneend of .an adjusting strap 19 adaptedv topass over the top of the head and having its opposite end secured to the head piece 16 before mentioned, whereby to prevent the mask from dropping. The outer surface of the frame 5 is covered by a thin sheet of leather 20 or other tough, pliable material, and'its inner surface is padded by a lining of soft felt 21, or other material capable of forming a cushion, the outer covering 20 and the inner lining 21 being extended slightlyv beyond the edges of the frame 5 and stitched together therearound and around the openings 6, 7 and 8. Thus a mask of this character, properly constructed as shown and de scribed, will effectively prevent disfigurement and injury, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
I claim: 7
In a boxing mask, the combination of a relatively stifl frame shaped to conform to facial outlines, having sight and breathing apertures, a tough flexible material covering the outer surface of said frame, a padded lining covering the inner surface of the frame and forming a cushion, and means to support the mask in operative position.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. WHITE.
Witnesses: V
ANNA M. MENGEL,
BATGHELOR.
