To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and ttate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Face-Masks, of which thefollowing is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful, improvements in face masks which are more particularly intended to be used by boxers orpugilists (either amateursor professionals) when givin public entertainments, or while practising, but maybe employed for other purposes, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and 0 eration of the various arts'thereof, as wi lbe hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The prm cipal object of the invention, is to provide a protectm mask for the face, which shall be simp e and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and efiicient in use or operation, and so made as' to be easily and securely attached to the head of the user over his face, in such a manner as to offer no obstruction to his vision, breathing, or hearin but so as to protect the face and particular y' the eyes, nose, jaws and cars from an o ponents blows and revent injury or dis rement and bloods ed.

Another '0 iject of the invention is to provido means whereby the mask may b'e'iuljusted to it faces of different sizes.

Still another object of the invention is to so construct the mask that parts thereof which will most'fre uently, receive the blows of the opponent, wil beheld at a slight distance from the face, thereby decreasing the concussion or force of the blows.

Various other obfects "and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe it referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of a face mask embodying the inventionshowing it-in position on the head of the user, the said head being illustrated by dotted lines, Fig. 2, is a front view in elevation, and Fig. 8, is a vertical sectional view taken on line 88, of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

The mask comprises an open frame work which is preferably made of metal and she ed to conform somewhat to the facial out ines, and consists of a brow band 5, substantially semi-circular in shape and having on each of its sides at about the middle part thereof a downward extension 6, each of which is provided in its lower portion with a slot 7, to receive a screw 8, which screws are used to adjustablysecure the extensions 6, to the lower portions 9, of the frame, which protect the jaws of the wearer. The metallic brow band 5, is also provided at 'each of its sides at the rear end thereof with a downward extension 10, to which the lower portions 9, are pivotally secured at their upper ends. Secured to eachside of the metallic brow band 5, near itsfront portion is a depending bar 12, each of which is provided at its upper end with openings 13, to receive screws 14, which are extended through suitable openings in the member a, and are employed to adjuslably connect the bars or members 12, to the brow band. Each of the bars 12, is pivotally secured at its lower portion to a forwardly curved member 15, which extends over the nose of the wearer and has its ends adjustably secured by means of screws 16, to the extensions (3, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1, of the drawing. The front portion of the nose protecting member 15, is connected at one of its sides to the sides of the jaw protecting members i), by means of pieces 16, which may be riveted or otherwise secured to the pieces 9, and 15.

Located inwardly of and at a slight distance from the front portion of the metallic brow band 5, is a supporting brow band 17,

which is made of leather or other suitable llexible material and is of substantially the same shape as the band 5, and has its rear portions secured to the inner surfaces of the sides of the band 5', and provided on its inner surface with padding or cushioning material 18, which padding or cushioning material is also secured to the inner surfaces of the extensions 6, 9, and 10, so as to rest against the sides of the head of the user and over the ears. This padding or cushioning material is provided with recesses 19, forthereception of the ears and with openings 20, so as to offer but little 0b-- struction to sounds. The jaw protecting members 9, are inclined downwardly an forwardly, as shown, and are connected together at their front or lower ends by means of a metallic chin piece 21, which is shaped to conform substantially to the outlines of the chin and has its front middle )ortion extended upwardly and is pre erably covered externally with leather 22, and is provided with padding or cushioning material 23 to protect the chin from injury, should the chin piece 21, at any time be forced in contact therewith.

The arts 5, 6, 9, 10, 15, an 16", are all prefera ly lined on their inner surfaces with a covering 26, such as leather, which is lapped over the edges of said members or parts and secured thereto in any suitable manner, which 'arran ement will prevent the edges cutting the g oves of the opponent.

Secured to the rear portion of the u per part of the frame of the mask is a ban 27 of any suitable material which is designed to pass around the back part of the headof the wearer and to securely hold thebrow band 17, against the forehead or brow and connected to the sides of the metallic band 5, near the rear portions thereof are straps 28, and 29, which are adapted to lie-extended over the crown of the head and who united by means of a buckle 80, so as to sup or't the mask in the proper position on ahead for use. and 16, the parts 9, and 21, may be moved upwardly or downwardly to accounuodate l the mask to faces of (htlerent lengths, and a when so adjusted the parts may be fixed by tightening up said screws.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawing, it will be readily understood and clearl seen, that the front ort-ion of the metalhe art of the mask will be held at a slight tlSltlllCO from the face of the user, by means of the brow band 17, and the strap 24, which latter is extended forwardly into the cavity of the chin piece 21, as before stated, which arrangement will to a considerable extent diminish the effects of the blows of the opponent, and will positively prevent injury or disfigurement of the face, and bloodshed.

Havin thus fully described my invention what I c aim-as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A face mask consistin of a frame shaped to conform to facial outlines and havmgsi ht, breathing, and hearing'apertures, plia le material covering arts of the outer surface of said frame, cus ioning material ap lied to the inner surface of the sides of the frame work, a horizontally disposed flexible band secured at its ends to the rear portion of the sides of the u per part of the frame work and extended orwardly within the same but terminating at a distance from the front upper portion of the frame work, and means to support the mask in operativeposition. 2. A face mask consisting of a frame shaped-toconform to the facial outlines and having sight, breathin and hearin apertures, a horizontally disposed fiexib e band secured at its ends to the rear inner portion of the sides of the up or part of the frame workand extended orwardly within the same but terminating at a distance from the front upper portion of the frame work, and means to support the mask in operative position.

A face mask consistin of a frame shaped to conform to the facial outlines and having sight, breathing, and hearing apertures, a horizontally disposed flexible band secured at its ends to the rear inner portion of the sides of the up or part of the frame work and extended orwardly within the same but terminating at a distance from the front upper portion of the frame work, a stra secured at its ends to the lower portion oft 1c sides of the frame and extended forwardly within the front lower portion of the frame but. terminating at a distance therefrom, and means to support the mask in operative position.

' 4. A face mask consistingv of a brow band having, at each of its. sides downward extensions, a jaw protecting member pivotally secured at its upper end to the rearmost of llll) each of said extensions and adjustably connected to each of the other of said extensions, a chin shield mounted on the lower portion of the jaw protecting members, a. 5 curved member mounted on and located forwardly and above the jaw protecting members and adjustably connected to the brow band, and meansto support the mask in operutive position.
