` BUTTON-FORM.
Application filed November 1, 1918. Serial N 0.260,68'3.
T0 all eli/1,0m t may conc-cmi.'
Be it known that I, BERTHA M. GEEN, a subjectV of theKing of Great Britain, re-v siding at Kelowna, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Button-Forms, of which the following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to buttons and particularly to that class of buttons which are covered with textile material such as cloth, the invention having for its object to provide` a separable button form, the parts of which can be quickly assembled andcovered by an unskilled person without trouble and whichV may be vused over and over by disengaging the parts and substituting a new piece of cloth for Vthat previously covering the button. Y Y
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, particularly pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an enlarged central, transverse sectional view of the improved button.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the button showing a modification, Iand Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a further modication.
In the drawings, 10 indicates the upper or front portion of the button form and 1l the rear or back of the form. The front of the form may be circular or of any other outline and has a flat or curved top as shown, which may be made of sheet metal 12 stamped to the desired form and rovided with a filling block 18 attached to the' inner side of the sheet metal 12 in any desired manner; or if preferred the part 10 may be made of composition of other material, the whole being integrally formed. In the center of the block 13 or button form 10 is a cylindrical depression 14, the walls of which are threaded for a purpose to be described later. The marginal edge- 15 of the form 10 is of cylindrical or other cross sectional shape and extends in rear of the front portion 10 of the button form. At two diametrically opposite points, the

edge 15 is provided 'with inwardly projecting lugs 16, each of whichA maybe formed by' makingy two vparallel 'cuts in the cylindrical portion 15 and forcing'the metal be# tween the cuts inwardly. Over the form 10, textile material yof any kind for coverin'gthe button is*A placed yand its edges folded inwardly over the edge V15 of the form being retained in place Vby an annular holding member or ring 17 made of sheet metal of a width substantially equal to the length of the cylindrical'edge VportionV 15 of the forni 10l and of such diameter as to snugly t within the form after the cloth has been placed in position. suitable points the ring 17 lis provided with lnotches 18 into which the lugs 16'enter and prevent rota- "1'9" of a shapesimilar to that of theJ form v10, from the center of which on its front side there projects a stud 20 threaded at 21 to engage the depression 14 to hold the parts in place. At this time the peripheral edge of the plate will bear upon the outer edge of the ring 17 and hold it against any outward movement, the lugs 16 engaging the notches 18 and preventing inward movement of the ring. Any suitable means may be mounted on the plate for fastening the button to a garment, the means here shown consisting of an enlargement 22 on the outer face of the plate through which is formed a perforation 23 for the attaching thread to pass through.
lf desired, the plate 19 may be madelarger than the diameter of the form 10 and its edge folded, as at 24, Fig. 3, to form a bead or other border surrounding the button, which may be colored or otherwise ornamented.
A further modification may be made by dispensing with the separate ring 17 and pressing the plate 19 into cup-shape as in Fig. 4, the marginal edge 25 of the plate 19 serving, in place of ring 17, as a means for retaining the folded edge of the cloth in place on the form 10. Y
The foregoing description and the draw ings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, o r approved form of l may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A separable button form comprising a cupped front member whose rear edge is cylindrical and provided with inwardly projecting lugs, a :t'abric covering this member and turned inward under its edge, a ring fitting within said edge and provided with notches receiving said lugs, a rear member engaging the rear edge of the front member and ring, and a screw connection between said front and rear members.
2a. A separable button form comprising a front member open at its rear and designed to be covered with textile material, an annular member fitting within the front member and forming a clamp to hold the textile material over the front member, lugs projecting inwardly from the sides of the `front member engageable with notches in the annular member to prevent rotation of the latter member, a rear member adapted to bear against the annular member and hold the same in place and also against the edge of the'front member, and a threaded stem on the rear member rengageable with a threaded depression in the front member.
3. A separable button form comprising a cup-shaped sheet metal iront member, a block within said cup-shaped member partly filling the same and rigidly secured to said member, an annular member slidable within the iront member and designed to hold a strip of textile material covering the front member in position thereon, the margins oft said textile material being held between the annular member and the wall of the front member, lugs projecting inwardly from the front member engageable with notches in the annular member to prevent rotation thereof, a plate-shaped rear member adapted to bear against the edge of the annular member and the folded textile material to assist in holding them in place, and a threaded stemL on the rear member engageable witha lthreaded depression in the filling block of the front member.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence oi two witnesses.
BE THA M. GEEN.
