rowme BABY CRIB. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4. SH.
' Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
SITES A NT GFFIQE s'rnvn'rAKAos, or HARV Y, iIiIiINOIS FOLDING BABY-CRIB.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVE TAKAos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented Folding'Baby-Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding beds of the type adapted to fold together 7 into a compact arrangement, an object being to provide an improved and simplified bed ofthis character whichmay be readily folded together into. a comparatively small space, simple to: operate and cheap to manufacture.
In the preferred form of my invention I provide side-frames suitably connected by fold between the sides, and a spring mattress frame connected to the sides and arranged to fold between them when theyfare moved together. I also provide end-gates which swing inwardly of the side frames at the upper part of thebed. Thus by having the end gates between the upper part of the sides, and the mattress spring between the lower part of the sides, they may be folded into a very compact arrangement.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a better understanding of my invention: v Figure l is an isometric view of my improved bed; I
Fig. 2 is a View of one end of a side-gate showing the method of supporting the sides so that they may be raised and lowered;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the latching device for holding the end-gates; and
Fig. 4 is an end view of the bed partly folded.
Referring more now in detail to the preferred construction of my invention. it comprises a light metal frame-work having four corner posts 1, preferably of metal tubes which are made up into two sides or sideframes, the two end posts 1 of each sideframe being securely connected by tubes 2. Adjustable side gates are provided which are made up of metal tubes 3, 4. 5 suitably connected by supporting rods 6, so as to provide a rigid construction. The side gates are slidably supported upon rods 7 which are secured at their upper and lower ends to the post 1, and extend through suitable openings in the ends of the tubes 3, 4, 5 so that the side gates may be readily raised and lowered. In order to hold these in their upper position, as shown in Fig. 1, latches Specification of Iietters Patent.

are-provided preferably in the form of piv oted'levers 8, having perforated ends, which surround-the supporting rods 7 and arefrie tionally held against the side thereof by means of the spring 9. In order to lower the side gates, the levers 8 are pressed 'so as to disengage from the rods 7, whereby the gates may be lowered until clear of the mattress or spring, so that ready. access may be had from the side ofthe bed. These side gates'are particularly useful on childrens beds or cribs. Y
The bed is adapted to fold up in the manner as indicated in Fig. 4 and for this purpose I provide connecting bars 14, 15 suitably pivoted at 16, 17 respectively to the corresponding corner post, and also pivotally connected in the middle at 18, 19 and connected together by connecting rods 20.
' latches 12 are first pressed and-the end gates 10 swung inwardly against aside gate as indicated in Fig. 4. The end frames 14, 15 are then moved upwardly as indicated in Fig. 4, and the mattress spring frame 21 moved downwardly, these parts folding up as the two sides are moved together. It is to be understood of course, that in Fig. 4, the bed is shown only partly closed but that the folding operation continues until'the two sides are moved together against the end gates and mattress spring frame, thus securing a very compact arrangement. In
order to open the bed the sides are pulled tion, I have shown it as a bed constructed of a light metal framework but it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to this particular construction, but that wood or other material may be. used as desired. I.
also understand that many changes and modifications of my invention as shown may be readily made and therefore I do not desire to be limited to the exact arrangement 7 shown or described but aim to cover all that which comes within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim I 1. A folding bed made up of a light'metal framework comprising four corner posts,
side frames connecting each pair of posts'at the upper ends of the posts, a foldable mattress spring-frame pivotallyconnecting the side frame and corner posts intermediate Copiesof this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
thereof, end frames pivotally conneotingthe side frames, swinging end gates at the upper ends of the corner posts adjacent the side frames, whereby said end gates may be swung'inwardly against the side frames at the upper part of the bed and the mattressspring frame swung downwardly below the end gates when the side frames are folded together so as toform a compact structure.
2. A folding bed comprising side frames, end bars pivotally connected at each end of the side frame and at their centers whereby the side frames may be moved into intimate relation and the end bars folded between, and end gates normally in position over the end bars to prevent folding thereof, but mova'ble inwardly against the side frames whereby the end frames may be moved and the sides folded together. g
3. A folding bed comprising side frames,
end frames pivotally connectingthe side frames so as to permit folding together of the side frames, a mattress spring frame suitably connected to the side frames, said spring and end frames being pivotally constructed so as to permit one to fold upwardly and the other, downwardlybetween the side frames, and end gates adapted to swing inwardly against the side frames but normally in position to prevent a folding movement of the upwardly movable frames.
