To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP W. BAIR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at .Kansas City, in the county-of VVyandottc and State of Kansas, have invented a certaln new and useful Improvement in Davenports, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in davenport-s.
My invention is particularly adapted to davenports of the type having a foldable bed bottom.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a davenport with a folding bed bottom of novel construction, which may be quickly and easily moved to the folded or the stretched out position, which is simplein construction, strong, durable and not llkely to get .out of order, which is cheap to manufacture, and which is efliclent 1n operation.
My invention provides further novel' means for supporting the bed bottom in the folded position and which aids the operator to unfold the same.
My invention provides further a novel pillow rest, and also novel means for oooperatively connecting the pillow rest and the adjacent legs of the bed bottom, whereby they may be simultaneously moved to and from the folded position.
Other novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
The l)OX fran'le is provided with the usual end membersl having respectively hinged thereto arms 2, and which are connected bythe usual back frame 3 which, between the varms 2 forms with the side members l-a from the stretched out position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the folded position shown in Fig. 8. These bed bottom sections comprise a seat section having an upholstered seat 7 to the under sides of which, adjacent to its ends respectively are secured two angle bars 8. 3
Pivoted to the angle bars 8 respectively by means of transverse pins 9 are two angle bars 10 of an intermediate bed bottom section, said bars 10 being pivoted by transverse pins 11 to the adjacent ends respectively; of two angle bars 12, which form part of the inner secction of the bed bottom. A transverse bar-13 is rigidly secured to the inner ends of the bars 12. A'transverse channel bar 14 is secured to the bars 12 adjacent to the pins 11.
As shown in Fig. 5, the horizontal flanges of the bars 8 extend inwardly beyond the pins 9, and the horizontal flanges of the bars 12 extend outwardly beyond the pins 11, whereby the seat and intermediate sections cannot break in folding beyond the stretched-out position, but which arrange ment permits these sections to fold inwardly with respect to the bars 12, as shown in-dotted lines in Fig. 5.
15 designates two angle bars of the outer section of the bed bot-tom pivoted respectively by transverse pins 16 to the bars 8. The bars 8 extend outwardly beyond the pins 16 so as to have a bearing upon. the horizontal flanges of the bars 15, whereby the outer section of the bed bottom is held from swinginginwardly past the straight line position, but'is permitted to swing outwardly, as shown in Fig. 7.
The bed bottom carries a mattress support of any desired type, but which preferably comprises a series of jointed longitudinal. rods 17 secured to transverse bars 18, said rods and bars having their ends supported by coil springs 19 fastened in the usual man- I nor to the sides and ends of the bed bottom.
The seat 7 is pivoted on a single horizontal axis located, preferably su stantially centrally between the upper and lower sides of the seat, to the box frame. To opposite ends of' the seat 7 are respectively secured two plates 21 which are respectively pivoted by transverse pins 20 to two upwa 'dly tending bars which are respectively secured to the end members 1 of the box. frame. By means of this arrangement, the seat 7 in either the operative or the inverted position remains in substantially the same horizontal plane.
Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, 23 designates pillow rest having secur d to its ends respectively two plates which are respectively pivoted by two transverse pins to two vertical plates 26 which are secured to the bars 15 resoectivel r A 1 The plates 24 are provided with teetu 27 which mesh with gear teeth 28 provided in two plates 29 which are respectively secured to two legs 30, and which are'respectively pivoted, to the plates 26 by two transverse pins 31. A transverse bar 32 has its ends secured respectively to the legs 30- and serves as a brace therefore, and, by striking; the bars 15, limits the upward movement of the legs. I

This position of the spring 33 enables it to hold the pillow rest and legs "releasably in the open or the folded position, so that they will not. be moved accidentally from the position to which they may be ad justed. By the closed position, the pillow rest will be swung to the closed position. In the latter position, the pi low rest is adapted to bear against the upper side of the mattress 4, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, thereby holding the adjacent end of the mattress securely to the bed bottom.
l/Vhen the bed bottom is to be folded, the legs 30 and pillow rest 23 are folded as shown in solid lines in 3 and following which the scat member 7 is swung inwardly on the pins 20, thereby swinging in wardly and downwardly to the bars 110 of the intermediate section, thereby forcing downwardly the bars 12, the inner ends of which are respectively supported by two cables 3e which have a running connection with and are supported by two supporting devices comprising preferably two pulleys 35 mounted respectively upon the inner sides of the end members if One set or ends of the cables 34 are attaches to the seat 7 at opposite ends thereof, the other set of ends of the cablesoheing respectively secured to two plates 36, which are secured respectively to the bars 12 adjacent to the inner ends thereof.

By having the bed bottom pivoted so as to swing bodily upon a single horizontal, transverse axis comprising the pins'QO, a very simple and efficient structure is afforded, which eliminates much complicated mechanism.
For assisting in supporting the bed bot tom in the stretched-out position, the seat 7 has attached to its rear edge one or more legs 40 which rest'upon the floor when the seat is inverted, as' shown in Fig. 2.
For holding the bed bottom closed, against the opening effort of the springs 39, there is secured to the back of the box frame adjacent to the upper end thereof a vertical plate l-l having at its lower end a rearward extension 5 2, against the under side of which is adapted to bear the adjacent edge of the pillow rest 23, as shown in Fig. 8. In opening the bed bottom, the back memher 5 is swung to open position shown in Fig. 2, after which the outer section is swung outwardly so as to free'the pillow rest 23from the locking device comprising the projection 42, whereupon the springs 39 will draw the bar 37 upwardly, thereby assisting the operator in swinging outwardly the seat section, which through the intermediate spacing bars 10, will force upwardly the inner section of the bed bottom. The pillow rest 23 and legs 30 are then swung to the open position, so that when the bed bottom is fully extended, the legs 30 and 40 will rest upon the floor.

I What I claim is 1. In a davenport, a box frame, and a bed bottom comprising a seat section, an inner section and an intermediate section, said sections being pivotally connected with-each I other so as to swing from a folded position to a horizontal extended position, the seat. section being hinged to the box frame 1ndependently and out of axial alinement with the pivotal connection between the sections, on an-axis located intermediate of the upper and lower sides of the seat section, a bearing device carried by the box frame, and a flexible supporting member supported by said' bearing device and having a running connection therewith and having its ends secured respectively to the seat section and to the inner section and arranged to elevate and hold elevated the inner section when the sections are swung from the folded to the stretched out position.

In a davenport, a box frame, a bed bottom hinged thereto and comprising a plurality of section pivotally connected with each other so as to be swung from a folded position in the box frame to an extended horizontal position, a pillow rest carried by the bed bottom, and releasable means for lockiiwly engaging the pillow rest with the box frame for holding the bed bottom in the folded position.
3. In a davenport, a frame, a bed bottom section hinged to the frame, a bed bottom section hinged to the first named bed bottom section, a support mounted on said frame, and a flexible supporting member' connecting the two sections and supported by and having a running connection with said support, said flexible member being adapted to cross the axis of the first named section when the latter is swung from one position to another.

In a davenport, a frame, two bed bottom sections hinged to each other, one of the sections being hinged to the frame so as to swing-from a stretched-out to a folded position and having means for engaging the sections being a seat section provided with an arm for engaging and limiting the swinging movement in one direction of the other section, and yielding means for engaging and supporting said arm, when the seat section is swung to the operative position.
