The present invention is a collapsible crib with the lounge or bed portion thereof mounted on the bedstead to have a swinging movement.

The object of the present invention is to provide a crib of the above stated character which is extremely simple and durable and easily folded or extended for use, and which may be packed away in a small space,

in rendering it desirable for tourists and the like. Oneof the features of the invention resides in means for detachably connecting the folded bed portion of the crib to the end members of the supporting frame or bedstead to render the same substantially rigid therewith when desired and which permits the bed portion to be extended and folded simultaneouslywith the extension or folding of the end members of the frame.

Other purposes and means of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in describing the elements, combination and arrangement of parts and application of principles constituting the invention, and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims In this specification and the annexed 3o drawings, the invention is disclosed in the form in which it is considered to be the best, but the invention is not limited to such form because it is capable of being embodied in other forms; and it is to be understood E that, in and by the claims following the description herein it is intended to cover the invention in whatever form may embody within the scope thereof.

In the drawings which show the preferred embodiment of the invention as at present devised:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the crib in open or extended position;

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the crib in closed or folded position;

Throughout the specification and drawings, like characters denote similar and like parts wherever referred to.

Referring particularly to the drawings, the crib comprises four upright posts 10 defining the corner posts of the usual bed or crib in a manner well understood, two of the posts being at one end of the crib a: and two at the other end y, each suitably spaced apart. The posts at each end of the bed are held in fixed spaced relation in any suitable means, such as, for instance, the top bar 11 and cross bars 11 secured at their opposite ends to the posts, respectively, thus forming the bed supporting ends. The bed ends are connected together by collapsible side rails 12, each composed of sections a and Z) hinged together at their inner ends and having their outer ends pivotally connected respectively, to the opposite side posts 10 of the end members w and y of the supporting frame, as clearly illustrated in the drawings. Thus, a bedstead is provided which may be collapsed by breaking toggle joint, at 13, of the side rails 12. One of the sections of the side rails 12 is provided with an extension 0 formed with a hook (Z to engage a stud or the like (Z on the other side rail section to prevent the toggle joint from being broken except by an upward movement of the sections a and Z), as will be readily understood. In order to avoid against accidental upward movement of the sections a and b, which will cause a collapse of the end members w and 3 of the frame, brace. members 1 1 are provided in the form of links 1 1, one pivoted at one end to each of the posts 10 above the side rails 12 and having the other end formed with a hook or other suitable element 15 to engage a projection h on the side rail members,ae clearly shown in the drawings. 5?"

, It will thus be manifest that the end members ac and y of the crib or bed frame may be moved toward each other in close relation by first disengaging the link 14 from the members 15 and in breaking the toggle joint at 13 with an upward movement.

The'bed frame'just described supports a swingable crib which comprises end members 16, of any suitable construction. These end members 16 are connected by upstanding side rails or guards which are here shown as comprising slats .or bars 17 secured together in a lazy-tong construction. The ends of each side guard are pivotally secured to opposite side edges of the end members 16, one'endof'these pivots of the side guards being slidably mounted in a slot 18, preferably provided in' the upper portion of each end member 16 as clearly illustrated in the drawings. The bottom of the crib may be of any suitable construction or' material which will rest upon the lateral projecting abutments 19 at the lower edges-oftheumembers 16 and upon the transverse slat20connected to a medial portion of the lower edge of the guard as clearlyshown in the drawings. The bottom will preferably fold on a transverse medial, rail to occupy the space between the end members 16 when the crib is folded, which space will also be occupied by the mattress.

The bars 23 are substantially coextensive with g the width ofthe frame end members x and 3 and, in the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, support the crib by flexible connecting members, such as chains 2&, extending from the ends ofthe bars 23 and connected to the end members "16 of the crib. 7

It will thus be clearly manifest that the crib may be'rocked with a lateral oscillating movement and maybe-moved to folded position, shown in Figure 2, by reason of thelazy-tong construction of the side guard. Means are provided to render the end members 16 of the bed portion rigid with the bed supporting frame in order to prevent a rocking movement and, in Figures 1, 2and 4:, consists of a hook 21 and eye 22 connection between the frame ends wand y and the crib end 16,"while in the form of the invention shown'in Figures 6 and 7 this means comprises a rotatable shaft 26 mounted in the end posts 10 and having a lug 27 on its innerend to engage and lock in a corresponding slot 28 in the end members 16, the outer end of the shaft 26 having a finger piece 29. This means, just described, aside from holding the bed or crib rigid with the frame against swinging movcl'nent, also serve to unfold or extend the crib simultaneously or in unison with the extension or unfolding of the end a: and of the supporting frame.

The flexible connections 24: permit the crib section to be shaken or jigged in contra-distinction to the oscillating swinging move ment, just described, and for this purpose lugs 30 are pivotally mounted on the bars 11 of the members a; and g to be moved in the path of movement of the bars 23, so as to hold said bars in a fixed normal position against move ment. 7

In Figure 6 a modified form is shown wherein the bar 23, corresponding-to the bar 23 in Figures 1, 2, and 3, has downwardly extending ends which are secured or integral with the end or panel members 16 of the crib.

From the above description, it is obvious that a very useful and desirable crib has been provided of simple and durable construction which may be collapsed or folded in compact form to occupy a very limited space and which at the same time incorporates in a crib of the bed type, a horizontal swinging movement which is very desirable. The construction also permits a simple shaking or gging of the crib independently of the swinging movement, and also permit the crib to be made rigid at will to the bedstead or frame, as well as permitting both the crib and bedstead to be extended or collapsed in unison by one operation.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A bed of the type described comprising a bedstead having upright supporting ends and collapsible side rails connecting said ends, a crib disposed between said ends and said rails of the bedstead including end members and collapsible side guard rails connecting said end members, substantially horizontal bars one pivoted at medial points to each of the end members of the bedstead, flexible members supporting said crib from the end portions of said bars, operable means for holding said bars against movement at will, means for fixedly and detachably connecting said crib and bedstead at will.

2. A bed of the type described comprising a bedstead having upright end members connected by side rails having hinged sections permitting the same to be collapsed, a crib disposed in said bedstead and lying wholly within said side rails thereof, said crib being pivotally supported from the ends of the bedstead and having side rail guards of a lazytong construction, a foldable bottom for said crib hinged to the end members of the crib whereby the bedstead and crib may be collapsed and extended together.

A bed of the type described comprising a bedstead having upright end members connected by side rails composed of hinged sections permitting the same to be collapsed and the end members to be moved in closely associated relation, a crib disposed between said bedstead end members and side rails, said crib having end members pivotally supported from the upper ends of said bedstead end members and having lazytongside rail guards conmeeting said end members of the crib, and releasable means for maintaining adjacent end members of bed and crib against relative movement.
