Description
N. A. ARMSTRONG.
BROOM ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION EILED MAY 4, 191a.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
. ITED STATES PATENT OF NEAL A. ARMSTRONG, OF HOYT, COLORADO.
BROOM ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1'7, 1918.
Application filed May 4, 1918. Serial No. 232,573.
Colorado, have invented new and useful Im-- provements in Broom Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a simple attachment for brooms which is designed to preserve the life of the broom.
Other objects and advantages of construction will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the drawings a broom is indicated by the numeral 1 having the usual handle 2.
- My improvement is preferably constructcd from a single strand of wire having a natural resiliency, but which is also provided with means for exerting a slight but sutlicient tension between the upper or bail shaped portion thereof and the lower substantially rectangular portion or frame.
The upper portion of the improvement is in the nature of a U-shaped bail and is inclicated by the numeral 3. The side strands providing the bail are coiled at a right angle with respect to the said strands proper, said coils being indicated by the numerals 4. Connecting these coils is a bar 5, and formed on the end strands of the coils are the straight arms 6 of the lower portion or frame of the device. The arms 6, adjacent the lower ends thereof are extended in an outward angular direction as indicated by the numeral 7 and the ends of the said angular portions are connected as indicated by the numerals 8.
The device may be easily and quickly applied to the broom, the frame being arranged so that the bar 8 will contact with one of the sides of the whisk of the broom near the active edge thereof, the arms 6- being arranged one upon each of the sides of the broom, the coils 4. being likewise arranged upon the broom. The arms of the bail are arranged upon the face of the broom opposlte that engaged by the connecting member 8 of the frame, the said bail overlying the top of the broom and receiving the handle 2. The connecting member 5 contacts with the face of the broom opposite that engaged by the connecting member 8, and by an arrangement as above described it will be noted that the whisk of the broom is held against lateral movement and is reinforced at both the top and adjacentto the active surface thereof.
The device may be cheaply manufactured, may be easily and quickly attached to or removed from a broom, and it is believed the advantages of the construction will be apparent without further description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A broom attachment constructed from a single strand of spring wire including an upper U-shaped portion, the arms of which, at the ends thereof being coiled, a transverse strand connecting the coils, parallel strands depending from the coils, said parallel strands, at the ends thereof being bent angularly and outwardly, and a connecting member for the last mentioned portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
NEAL A. ARMSTRONG.
