SHOE-POLISHING BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented.July 22, 1919.
Application filed March 10, 1919. Serial No. 281,676.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. DELVAUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Champaign, in the county of Champ'aign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Polishing Brush, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shoe polishing brushes and has as its principal object to provide a holder for retaining the blacklng box on the brush when not in use so as to avoidthe separation of the brush and box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for retaining the box of shoe polish effectively and conveniently upon the brush.
Another object is to provide a brush attachment of the above character which is simple in construction, consists of few parts, and which will not render the brush cumbersome to handle.
With the above and other objects in view that will be enlarged upon hereinafter, the invention consists of the novel combination, arrangement of parts and specific details to be hereinafter described and illustrated and ex licitly defined in the appended claim.
11 the drawing: Figurel is a side elevation of a shoe brush having my holder mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the device mounted upon the upper face of the back part of the brush.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are designated by corresponding characters of reference throughout all of the views, the numeral 5 denotes a shoe polishing brush of any well known type.
The improved holder comprises, a length of resilient metal 10. This length of metal is bent transversely at right angles as indicated at 11 and again bent at right angles at 11. This manner of bending the length of metal affords a pair of parallel gripping members indicated by the numerals 12 and 13, the gripping member 13 being secured to the brush 5 at one end of the same by fastenings 14. The end of the member 13 is bent outwardly at an angle as indicated at 15. The gripping member 12 has its end transversely curved to conform to the curvature of the box, this transversely curved part belng denoted by the numeral 16. By providing the angularly disposed end of the gripping member it is necessary to turn the blackening box at an angle to engage the same between the two gripping members, this causes the box to contact with the gripping members 12 and force the same away from the gripping member 13 and thereby cause the box to be gripped firmly.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the box holding device is mounted upon the upper face of the back of the brush. However, the construction of the box holder is not altered,
From this disclosure it will be manifest that the brush together with its attachment may be manufactured and sold as one article, or the attachment sold as a separate article, the attachment not adding materially to the cost of the brush.
This form of the invention is merely for the purpose of illustrating my idea and in no sense do I limit myself to the exact formation herein set forth but that the invention may be modified in as many respects as may be fairly embodied in the sub-joined claim.
What is claimed is In a device of the character described, a support, a box retaining clamp secured to the support including a length of resilient metal bent in substantially U-shaped formation and including a pair of parallel gripping members, one of the gripping members being provided with a longitudinally curved end which extends toward the remaining gripping member, the latter member being transversely curved to conform to the contour of the box, the curved end of said grip-' ping member and the transversely curved end of said other gripping member coacting to retain the box therebetween.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR L. DELVAUX.
