Description

W. JONES.
SANITARY PILLOW.
I APPLICATION FILED DEC. 5, 19!]- 1,270,298. Patented June 25,1918.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY WALTERJ ONES, OF DAYLIGHT, TENNESSEE.
SANITARY PILLOW.
Application filed December 5, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WVALTEB Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Daylight, in the county of \Varren and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Pillows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pillows, and more particularly to sanitary pillows.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap, comfortable compartment pillow which may be readily emptied and laundried and its filling either fumigated or replaced.
Another object is to provide a sanitary pillow which can be readily adjusted to the needs of the user thereby rendering it especially useful for the sick and for travelers, and which, when deflated may be stored in a very small space.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appearas the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter-dd scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a plan view of a pillow constructed in accordance with this invention folded in position ready for use,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation taken from the inside showing the pillow in open position, parts being broken away,
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, the pillow 1 constituting this invention is composed of a casing 2 formed of substantially rectangu lar sheets 3 and 4 which are secured along their adjacent edges by stitching in the usual manner. This casing may be of any desired size, according to the size of the pillow it is desired to construct and the inner sheet 4 is composed of two sections to facilitate the insertion and removal of the filling 7 which may be feathers, down, hair or any desired soft material. The sections 5 and 6 of the inner sheet 4 are shown with their ends folded back in Fig. 2 to disclose the interior at the filling cempartment or as:

ing 2. This casing 2 is designed to be folded int'ermediately of its ends, preferably midway the length thereof as shown by the dotted line 6' in Fig. 2.
The casing 2 is provided along its side edges between the folding line 6 and at one end thereof with a plurality of fastening elements 8 here shown in the form of spring sockets designed to receive the cooperating stud fasteners 9 carried by the side edges of the casing on the other side of the folding line as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. An extension pocket or casing 10 is carried by one end of the casing 2 and may be made integral therewithor stitched thereto as shown in Fig. 2. This casing 10 is composed of an outer sheet 11-and an inner sheet 12, the lat ter being slit transversely midway its ends as shown'at'13 to form an opening for the insertion of an inflation bag 14. This slit is normally closed by a lacing cord 15 which passes around studs 16 arranged on the opposite sides of the slit 13 as is shown clearly in Fig. 2 so that after the air bag has been inserted within the casing 10 it may be retained therein by lacing up the slit in the manner just described. An opening is formed through one corner of the casing 10, preferably at the left inner corner as shown in Fig. 2 and is designed for the passage therethrough of the inflation tube 17 which may be provided with a valve, not shown, such as is customary in devices of this character.
In the use of this pillow the casing 10 is first folded inwardly against the adjacent inner face of casing 2 and then the other end of said casing 2 is folded over casing 10 and connected along its side edges to the opposite edges of the other portion of the casing 2 by means of the cooperatin snap fastening elements 8 and 9 so that t e inflation chamber will be centrally disposed between the two members of easing 2 and entirely encompassed thereby as is shown clearly in Fig. 3.
After the parts have been so disposed the inflation chamber or bag 14 may be inflated by means of the tube 17 by blowing through said tube which is the ordinary manner of are composed may be of ticking or any de-. sired fabric capable of being laundried to assist in rendering the device more sanitary.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is. merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim 1. A pillow composed of a casing filled with soft material and havin its inner wall slit longitudinally toform a filling opening, fastening elements carried by the side edges and one end of said casing, an extension pocket carried by the other end of said casing, an inflation bag disposed in said pocket means for securing said bag in said pocket, a filling tube projecting through said pocket, said pocket being foldable against one face of the casing, and means for holding said pocket in operative position.
2. A pillow composedof a casing having a filling opening in one face thereof, a suitable soft filling disposed within said casing, an extension casing carried by one end of said firstmentioned casing and having an opening therein, an inflation bag mounted in said extension casingwith a filling tube projeoting through one wall of the casing, the first-mentioned casing being foldable 1ntermediately of its ends and the extension casingbeing adapted to be folded between the folds of the first mentioned casing, and means for retaining the parts in folded position.
In testimony whereof I aflix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
