Description
PATENTED SEPT. 11
B. P. CARY. SHAM PILLOW APPLICATION FILED JAN.31, 1905.
PATENT @FFIGE.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CARY. OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
' SHAIVI PILLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed January 31. 1906. Serial Nor 243,478.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sham Pillow, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sham pillows.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of sham pillows and to provide a pair of sham pillows of simple and inexpensive construction adapted when not in use to be compactly folded together and hung up to arrange them out of the way and to avoid soiling the pillowshams.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of sham pillows of this character from which the pillow-Shams need. not be detached when the sham pillows are removed from a bed.
Also the invention has for its object to provide sham pillows from which the pillowshams may be removed when desired, but which will be securely held thereon, so that they will not blow off should a window be raised.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pair of sham pillows constructed in accordance with this invention and arranged on a bed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sham pillows being folded together and hung up. Fig. 3 is an end elevation illustrating the arrangement of the hinges. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 8.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawmgs.
1 1 designate a pair of substantially rectangular sham pillows, each having a flat back piece 2 and a substantially convex front 3. The back may, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, be provided with marginal flanges or strips, and the front is upholstered or padded and presents a pillow effect. The sham pillow is covered with suitable fabric, and the front is provided adj acent to the corners with buttons 5 for the attachment of pillow-shams 6, which are provided with suitable buttonholes but any other desired means may be employed for detachably securing the pillow-shams to the sham pillows.
The sham pillows are connected at their adjacent sides by hinges 7, secured to blocks 8, which are mounted on the sham pillows and which serve to space the sham pillows when the same are arranged on a bed, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The hinges permit the sham pillows to fold together, and the flat backs are arranged against each other when the pillow-shams are folded, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings.
The sham pillows are provided at their outer sides with loops 9, which are arranged together when the sham pillows are folded and which are adapted to be hung upon a hook 10 or other suitable support when the sham pillows are not in use. By this construction the sham pillows may be arranged out of the way and the pillow-Shams, which do not have to be detached when the sham pillows are removed, will not be soiled or mussed. The pillow-shams may be readily removed from the sham pillows when desired, as will be readily understood. The sham pillows may be constructed of any desired material and may be ornamented in any preferred manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A pair of foldable sham pillows, each consisting of a flat back piece having marginal flanges, padding filling the space within the flanges and projecting beyond the same to support a pillow-sham, and a covering for the padding, means for hinging the sham pillows together at one edge so as to permit In testimony that I claim the foregoing as their flat backs to fit together, and supportmy own I have hereto affixed my signature ing means located at the opposite free edges in the presence of two witnesses. of the sham pillows to permit the same to be BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CARY.
5 hung up when folded, said supporting means Witnesses:
also serving to retain the sham pillows in W. C. LANE, their folded position. i A. W. MCKINNEY, Jr.
