Improvement in Folding-Chairs.
Patented April 23, 18721 444 s j v UNITED STATES PATENT CHARLES A. JACKSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND KILBOltN WHITMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,059, dated April 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. J AGKSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding chair of my improved construction when open ready for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same when closed; Figs. 3 and 4, vertical sections.
My invention relates to an improvement in folding chairs; and consists in a seat the front of which is pivoted to the arms and front legs combined; when pivoted to the back, the rear of the seat being connected with the back by means of guide-pins and slots to allow the rear of the seat to be elevated and its front exposed to view when the chair is folded.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is the back, the'side pieces B B of which extend down to form the rear legs 0 C. To the side pieces of the back are pivoted at a a the curved arms D D, which extend down to form the frontlegs E E. G is the seat, the front of which is pivoted at b b to the lower portions of the arms D D, the rear of the-seat being provided with (pins 0 c, which project down from the under side of the seat, the lower portions of the pins being bent at right angles and entering slots 61 d in the side pieces of the back, by which construction, as the chair is folded, the pins move to the upper ends of the slots and the rear of the seat is thrown out, thus allowing it to be brought snugly down upon the pins B B and legs 0 O, as seen in Fig. 2. When the chair is unfolded for use, the rear of the seat rests on the crossbar H, extending between the legs 0 G.
From the foregoing itwill be seen that economy, strength, and simplicity are combined in a folding eh air constructed in accordance with my invention; in addition to which the seat, having a firm bearing at its front and rear, is prevented from being lifted out of place when occupied, and the arms are of such curvature as to afi'ord a comfortable rest for the arms of the occupant.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arms D D, with the legs E E, pivoted to the back B, in combination with the seat G, the front of which is pivoted to the arms, and the rear connected with the back by pins and slots, whereby the rear of the seat is allowed to rise when the chair is folded, substantially as described.
WVitnessmy hand this 31st day of January, 1871.
CHARLES A. J AGKSON. In presence of- N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
