Leeann.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH C. RECKER,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at lid Oakville, the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Electric Lampsmndl'do'hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with th accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereorn'to he a full,

Fig, 4 a-plan View of the candlestick "with the battery casing removed therefrom.
5 a plan view of the candiestick case.
Fig. l 6- a detached 'VlBW of one of the modified forms which my rocking batterylifter may assume.
My invention relates to an improved portalcle electriclamp, the object osing to "prosince at a W cost for ma nnfactnre a port aisle electric lemp constructed with particular reference to convenience and reliahiiity of operation. I W 1th these ends in View, my invention consists a portable electric lamp hayingcertain details of construction will he claims u In carrying out my invention, it entiploy a candlestick, so called, comprislng a struck hereinafter described and pointed out in the up sheet-metal base 3 having a handle at and a flaring concentric socket 5 at the bottom of which 18 located a cup 6, the upstanding portion of which ls'threaded and its bottom portion formed with a concentric opening 7;
formed at its lower end with threeds adapting it to be. screwed into the threaded cm standing portion of the cup 6. Tie nppe end of the said casing is contracted and adapted to receive ail-incandescent lamp ll- Specification of Letters Eatent.

formed at its lower end with a contact 12 which is located directly alcove the terminal 13 of the battery 10. A helical spring 14 interposed between the upper end of the battery and the upper end of the casing, provides for normally holding the battery in its depressed position.
For manually lifting the battery so as to light the lamp, I employ a rocking batterylii ter or switch consisting, as shown, of a single piece of wire having its "outer end bent to form a finger-piece 15 arranged adjacent to the handle 4 and between the same and the socket 5. The said battery-lifter also comprises a straight stem 16 which rocks in a groove 17' formed in the circular .flat upper face 18 of the central portion of the base 3, the said face forming-a hearing for the socket 5 and receiving the rivets 8 aforesaid. The said stem 16 is bent about midway of its length to ,forin an eccentric,
ofiseting cam-like coil 9 for which clearance is made by corresponding registered openings 20 and 21in the said face 18 and in the bottom the socket 5. The coil'19 is arranged with respect to the finger-piece 15 so that when the same is in its vertical position as shown in Fig. 3, the coil is depressed so as to permit the battery to he pushed downward into its retired position by the spring Li. On the other hand, when the finger-piece is turned horizontally, from left to right, as shown by hrolren lines in Fig. 4:, the coil 19 rises through the opening 17 in the cnpt' and lifts the battery against the tension of the spring M so as to bring its terminal 13 into engagement with the contact 12 of the lamp 1]., whereby the circuit is closed and the lamp lighted. When the finger-piece l3 is again lifted into its vertical position, thc'spring l4 re-asserts itself to depress the battery and put out the light. In the modified construction shown icy 6', the hatterydiiter comprises a linger-piece 22, stem '23, and an srnrlilie loop 24 formed by bending the 23 transversely, the said loop having the same batterylifting function as the coil 19 aforesaid.
' 1E cleim2- 1. lin a portable-electric iainp, the combination with a candlestick, of a tubular hettery-casing carried thereby and adopted to have an incandescent lamp mounted in its upper end and to receive a vertically movable battery, and a rocking battery-lifter journaled below the said battery-casing and formed between its ends with a lifting-memher for lifting the*battery Within the said casing for closing the circuit through the lamp.
2. In a portable electric lamp, the combi: nation with a'candlestick, of 'a tubular battery-casing carried thereby, an electric lamp mounted in the upper end of the said casing, a vertically movable battery located within the said casing, and a rocking battery-lifter mounted in the candlestick, having a fingerpiece and formed with a stem provided with an offsetting coil to engage with the lower end of the battery when the lifter is rocked for raising the battery to light the lamp, and. for sustaining it in such-position.
3. In a portable electric lamp, the (zombi nation with. a candlestick comprising a base, a handle therefor, a socket, and a threaded movable battery located within the said casing, and a rocking battery-lifter interposed between the said base and the bottom of the said socket, and provided with a liftingmember arranged to engage with the lower end. of the battery for lifting the same to light the lamp, and for sustaining it in its elevated position.
