PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.
Patented Oct. 13, 1914.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ADOLPH C. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure l a side view of a portable electric lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of the same on an enlarged scale.
My invention relates to an improvement in portable electric lamps in which the easing is tubular, simulating in appearance a candle, the object of this invention being to provide a portable electric lamp in the form of a candle and candle-stick; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out myinvention the candlestick is struck up from sheet metal forming a base 2 to which a handle 3 is a plied. The central portion 4 of the top of the base is raised and upon this is mounted a cupshaped shell 5 in the bottom of which is a socket 6 the center of which is raised forming a pressure point 7. The socket is screw threaded to receive the threaded lower end of a casing 8 which is provided in its upper end with an incandescent lamp 9 and adapted to receive a cylindrical battery 10. Between the battery and the upper end of the casing is a spring 11 the tendenc of which is to force the battery downwar and outof contact with the lamp. By screwing the casing 8 into the socket 6 the battery comes to 9. bearing on the pressure point 7 and is forced upward against the pressure of the s ring 11 until the upper end contacts wit the lamp and so closes the circuit, and to extinguish the lamp it is only necessary to turn-the shell sufficiently to allow the battery to drop away from contact with the lamp and thereby open the circuit. I thus provide in a very inexpensive form a portable electric lamp in the form of a candle and candle-stick in which the circuit may be closed by simply turning.the shell into its socket.
1. A portable electric lamp comprisin a candle-stick provided with a metal soc et having a pressure point, a casing adapted to be turned into said socket, an incandescent bulb mounted in the upper end'of the casing, a battery in the casing and resting on'said pressure point, and a spring between the 'top of the battery and the casing adapted to be compressed by turning the casing into the socket.
2. A portable electric lamp comprising a candle-stick having a base formed from sheet metal, a cup-shaped shell mounted on said base, a metal socket within said shell and formed in its bottom with a pressure point, a tubular casing adapted to be turned into said socket, said casing provided at its upper end with an incandescent lamp, a battery within said casing and resting on said pressure point, a spring between the upper end of the battery and casing and adapted to be compressed by turning the casing into the socket.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPH o. BECKER.
