JAMES A. ROSE AND GEORGE J. MASON, OF PRAIRIE CITY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES AND ADAM HARSHBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.

IMPROVEMENT lN SHOES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,460, dated October 31, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatWe, JAMES A. ROSE and GEORGE J. MASON, of Prairie City, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying` drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a dirt-exeluder for shoes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, We Will nonT proceed to describe its eonstruction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, Which forms a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of shoe with our dirteXcluder attached. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the dirt-excluder. Fig. 3 is a' similar View of the lappel7 and Fig. 4 of the upper of the shoe.

A represents the main part of the shoe-upper made of any suitable material, and which may be right, left, or straight, as required. B represents the dirtexcluder, which is fastened to the inner surface of the upper A at. the dotted line fff, such fastening to be in any suitable manner and far enough from the edge of the upper to allow for string-holes, as shown at i 'i i. On the other side of the slit or opening' in the upper A, at 7c, is attached the lappel "C, which falls over the dirt-excluder B and laces down to the main part, said lappel bein g provided with correspond,-` ing string-holes i t' fi. By this means the dirt is prevented from coming,` inte the foot.

Having thus full y described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A shoe having a dirt-excluder, B, of the form shown, attached below the lacing-holes or buttons 'i i by the seam f j' j', and arranged in relation to the lappel C as and for the purposes set forth.
