IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,836, dated May 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES A. ROsE and GEORGE I. MASON, of Prairie City, in the county of McDonough and in the State of II- linois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part'of ilar view of the dirt-excluder, and Fig. 4 of the shoe-upper.
A represents the main part of the shoe-upper made of any suitable material, and which may be right, left, or straight, as required. B represents the dirt-excluder, which isfastened to the inner surface of the upperA at the dot ted line a a. On the other side of the slit or opening in the upper A, at b, is attached the lapel O, which falls over the dirt-excluder B. On the lapel O are projections D, cut in the form of straps, in one piece with the lapel, and said projections or straps are to be fastened down to the upper A in any suitable manner. Similar projections'or straps D are also cut with the upper A, to be fastened to the lapel in any suitable manner. There may be one or more of said straps both on the upper and lapel, or they may be all cut on either, as may be desired. By this means the dirt is prevented from coming in to the foot.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe-upper, A, and lapel C out of the pattern shown, with strap projections D in the same piece, substantially as set forth.
