Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, lglltl.
Application filed August 11, 1914:. Serial No. 856,246.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. JENN INGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitepine, in the county of Gunnison and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes, and has primarily, for its object to preclude possibility of the boxv being reused after the grigmal contents have been removed thererom.
naturewhich will be exceedingly inexpensive to manufacture, in view of its simplicity, and at the same time will be sufiicient to withstand the strain exerted thereon with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, the top and one end being shown partly open to disclose the formation of the box, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the box, when the same is in a closed position, Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the box, showing one of the sides removed, and Fig. 4 isa plan view of the box shown in blank form, a portion of the box being broken away to disclose details.
in the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, my improved box generally designated 5 comprises a blank preferably made of pasteboard although any suitable material may be used, the box being formed to provide a base or bottom 6, which has extending from one of the longitudinal edges thereof, a side 7,
I the opposite ends of the latter being extended to provide the box ends 8, the opposite longitudinal edge of the side 7 from that which engaged with the base 6, being extended to provide a top 9, the free man Another object is to provide a box of this ginal edge of said top having portions of its opposite ends removed to provide a looking tab 10. The free terminal of each of the ends 8 is turned at right angles to the body, as indicated at 11, and shown to advantage'in Fig. 1, to provide side-engageable portions in a manner hereinafter more fully set forth.
A portion of the free margin of the base 6 is extended to provide a locking tongue 12,
the latter adapted for engagement between a pair of parallel sections 13. The sections 13 form one of the sides of my improved box, and are arranged in spaced relation adapted to be snugly engaged with the rightangled portions 11 of the ends 8, and the tab 10 of the top 9 An adhesive material is coated on the portions 10, 11 and 12, prior to engaging the latter betweenthe sections 13, thereby preventing access from being gained to the interior of the box, without first mutilating the latter.
In operation, therefore it is seen that the side 7 is turned upwardly at right angles to the base 6, and the ends 8 then turned into right-angled relation with the side 7 and the base 6, after which the tongue 12 is turned upwardly into parallelism with the side 7. The portions 11 of the ends 8 are then turned into angled relation and engaged between the parallel sections 13. This, therefore, completes the box, which after having been filled, is closed by coating the tab 10 with an adhesive agent and en gaging the same between the sections 13.
it will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings com.- prehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement at parts may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the ad vantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my inventime, what I claim as new and desire cure by Letters Patent is:
A box comprising a blank oi material adapted to be folded to provide a base,
ends and top, a tongue extending from the In testimony whereof I affix my signature free longitudinal edge of said base, a side in presence of two witnesses. comprising a pair of independent sections engaged With said tongue, said ends and GEORGE JENNINGS 5 said top being extended to provide engage- Witnesses:
able portions for securement between said MION MOMAHAN,
'sections, substantially as specified. D. D. WALBURN.
