ARTHUR CLIFTON JORDAN, OF AMELIA, VIRGINIA.
PAPER BOX.
:SPEGIFJIGATEDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,1 17, dated April 22, 1902. Application iiled August 9, 1901. Serial No. 71,542. (No modell- To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ARTHUR CLIFTON JOR- DAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amelia, in the `county of'Amelia and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specilication.
My present invention is designed more particularly as a specific improvement upon the paper-box body constituting the subject-matter of my Letters Patent No.370,483, of September 27, 1887; and its novelty and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved paper-box body as it appears when partly withdrawn from its complementary slip-sleeve. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the blank of which the box-body is formed. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the box-body. Figi is a detail longitudinal vertical section illustrative of the manner in which the locking-flaps on the reinforce-flaps are placed in engagement with lips struck from the bottom of the boxin accordance with my present invention, and Fig. 5 is a similar View illustrating one of the locking-flaps as held by the complementary lip on the bottom.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the several views of the drawings, referring to which- A is the blank of my improved box-body, which is made of paste or card board in the size desired. In common with the blank disclosed in myaforesaid patent the blank A is provided at its opposite ends and adjacent to its longitudinal edges with longitudinal parallel slits a and is also provided with longitudinal creases b in alinement with said slits and transverse creases c, which intersect the creases b in line with the inner ends of the slits. The blank A is also similar to that of my said patent, in that the portions between the slits ct, creases b lc, and the outer edges form corner-flaps B, the portions between the creases b and the longitudinal edges form side aps O, and the end portionst'. e., the portions between the slits a and creases c and the end edges of the blankconstitute end flaps D, which end flaps have reinforce-deps E,divided from them by transverse creases d. Said blank A, however, differs from the blank forming the subject-matter of my patent in that it is provided in its central or bottom portion F and adjacent to the ends thereof with lips G, designed to extend slightly upward from said central or body portion, Vand also in that the reinforceflaps are provided with locking-naps H, divided therefrom by transverse creases e. The said locking-aps are of the same width as the reinforce-flaps, so as to prevent a long edge to the lips G, and they are provided with transverse creases f, whereby they may be iiexed upwardly after the manner shown in Fig. 4 to facilitate the introduction of their end portions H beneath the lips G, as will be more fully hereinafter described.
In forming the box-body the end flaps D are first bent into upright positions onfthe ends of the bottom F, after which the side 'flaps Care turned up into upright positions and thecorner-flaps B are turned inward on the creases c at right angles to the side iiaps and within the end flaps D. The reinforceflaps E are then turned down against the inner sides of the naps Dv B, to secure said flaps B between the flaps E and D, and the locking-naps H, flexed as. shown in Fig. 4, are pressed down ou the bottom F, when their end portions H will readily take beneath the lips G, and thereby fasten the parts of the box in position without the employment of paste, lglue, or the like.` The facility with which the end portions H" of the lockinglaps may be introduced below the lips G is due to the provision of the creases fin the locking-flaps H, which adapt said iiaps to be flexed after the manner shown in Fig. 4, and consequently it will be appreciated that the said creases f constitute an important feature of my improved box and render the same far superior to the box of my aforesaid patent, whichlatter box is open to objection, because of the diiiculty attendant nponintroducing the tongues on the reinforce-flaps into slits provided in the bottom of the box and the liability of the'said tongues towork out of the said slits.
While my improved locking-naps H are adapted to be quickly and easily placed in engagement with the lips G in the mannerA box, as shown in Fig. 5, when the end portions H' are in engagement with the lips, and the consequent disposition of Jthe creasesfin a dead center. The locking arrangement described is also advantageous, because it leaves the under side of the bottom of the body perfectly smooth and free from projections, and therefore permits of said bodybeing used in conjunction with a slip-sleeve, such as shown in Fig. 1 and lettered I. IVhile designed more particularly for usein conjunction with a slip-sleeve, such as shown, it is obvious that my improved box-body is adapted to be used in conjunction with covers of other kinds.
I am Well aware that a paper box comprising end flaps having slits and middle aps adapted to be bent over the end flaps and provided with tongues creased to facilitate their insertion in the slits is old; also, that it is old, as shown in my own aforesaid patent, to provide the reinforce-fiaps which straddle the end iiaps with tongues to engage slits in the box-body, said tongues, however, being withont transverse creases.
I do not claim the constructions above defined; but
lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described papenbox body having lips G struck and extending upwardly from its bottom at points adjacent to its ends, andalso having its sides provided with projecting corner-fiaps B to bear against the inner sides of its ends, and the said ends provided with reinforce-fiaps E of a size to fold inwardly on the inner sides of the ends and corner-flaps and extend to the bottom so as to entirely cover said ends and corner-flaps and secure the same in place, and further having the locking-flaps H arranged on and parallel to the bottom and divided by creases from the flaps E, and provided, in turn, with' the transverse creases f resting in a deadcenter, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witmesses.
ARTHUR CLIFTON JORDAN. lVitnesses:
